Along the Umbral Path, hundreds of skittering claws raced along in the cover of darkness. Behind them, they pulled their creaking wooden canons. The Skaven were often silent but this was a war host to take a city and darkness was their only cover. Warplock Engineer Fizzgrits gestured to the assembled clawleaders and pointed to the gibbet along the road which pointed ominously towards a field filled with broken carts and shattered spears. The Skyre acolytes sent forward a few clanrats to explore only to see rising all around them the forms of the Nighthaunt, their tortured cursed forms appearing on the hills all around.
Immediately the Skaven barked orders for the ratmen to slay-slay the ghosts, rushing their warp lightning canons forward and trying to charge the warpstone, but something about the umbral magic along the path seemed to suppress it. The Nighthaunt advanced and as they did several Skaven simply died of terror, their faces twisted with nightmarish horror. The reaping blades of the spirits cut down so many more but it was behind this wall of ethereal murder that the greatest power of the dead was enacted.
Atop a hill overlooking the battlefield, an eerie scribe furiously wrote into his book, and each time the sentence ended another Skaven leader would collapse dead. Confused and terrified by this magic the Skaven rushed forward only to be met by one of Nagash’s Lord Executioners whose brutal axe carved left and right ending ratmen beyond counting. The Skaven began to waver until the Plague Furnace rolled up behind them renewing their assault. But even this creation of the Great Horned Rat’s pestilential powers was no match for the maddening scribbling of the Scriptor Mortis. Before long not a single Skaven was left along the road – most were dead and others carried back the nightmarish onslaught back to their leaders, the Umbral Path was death.
