As Dave and I were discussing how to make this Warhammer stepped hill, we decided that we would build it having Warhammer games in mind. The top of the hill is the size of an envelope 3 5/8 x 6 1/2 inches in size. On the bottom tier there is enough room to place a line of ten space marines.

Step 1.

Trace the outline of the envelope onto a sheet of 1” thick polystyrene (styrofoam insulation). Next draw an oval shaped guideline 1 – 2 inches around this. This will create a gradual slope on the outer edge of the top tier. Cut out the top tier.

Step 2.

Once the top tier has been cut, begin shaping the gradually sloped sides by slicing away thin slivers of polystyrene (we also recommend using a wire cutter). Do your best to create a rounded, 45-degree angle without cutting into the envelope outline.

Step 3

You then make the bottom tier by tracing the outline of the top tier onto another 1”-inch thick piece of polystyrene. Next, draw the outline of the bottom tier by tracing around the line of space marines. Continue by rounding off the edges just like the top tier.

Step 4

The masonite is marked by tracing around the bottom tier. Use a beveled edge when cutting out the edge. Do your best to make the angle fit with the curve of the bottom tier. Glue the three pieces together using hot glue or white glue. You can also reinforce the hill by sticking toothpicks in between the tiers. (We sometimes speed up the drying process by using a hairdryer).

Step 5

Apply a filler to blend the gaps between the steps (spackle will work fine). Glue clusters of sand and gravel on the hill to give the effect of stony ground. Next, paint the whole model using any brown paint.

Step 6

By painting the whole model brown it seals the polystyrene. You can drybrush other browns if you want but we don’t find it necessary seeing as it will be covered with flock. Finally, apply a thin layer of white glue over the hill (not covering the rocky areas) and sprinkle with Warhammer modeling flock.
