One thing that you may want to consider constructing for your Warhammer gaming hobby is a terrain board. This allows you to have a fun and exciting place to play your Warhammer games on, and is usually much better than playing on the kitchen table or on the floor.
It also allows you to create more terrain pieces that will match your table, creating a gaming environment that looks and feels impressive and realistic, enhancing your gaming experience.
This article is a step-by-step guide on how we make our gaming boards. There is more than one way to create gaming boards, including what material you could use, but we have found this to be the easiest and usually the cheapest.
What size board should you create?
There are a few options to choose from. They include:
-2′ x 2′
-4′ x 4′
-4′ x 6′
-4′ x 8′
(’ denotes feet - one foot = 30 cm)
The 2′ x 2′ boards are very flexible and allow you to create terrain that you can move around and form into various pieces, especially if you build in hills or rivers.
However, our favourite size to choose is 4′ x 4′, as it is a very good standard board size and allows for battles as high as a few thousands points on each side. It is also easy to add two of these boards together to form a 4′ x 8′ playing area for especially large battles, whereas with the 2′ x 2′ boards this is a little more clumsy and creates a playing area with a lot of gaps and unsightly lines.
Materials and Tools Needed
Here is a list of materials that you will need:
-1/2 sheet of plywood (4′ x 4′)
-16′ of 2″x1″ (pine is what we use, but it doesn’t matter)
-16 x 1 1/4″ screws
-power drill
-small drill bit (3/16″ should work)
-measuring tape
-pencil
-saw
-sandpaper
(WARNING: You should ALWAYS have adult supervision when using any tools or power tools.)
Step 1 - Cut 2″x1″ to size
The first thing you will need to do is cut the 2″x1″ into four pieces, two 4 feet long and the other two 46 inches long.
Step 2 - Create foundation
Before putting any screws in you will want to drill holes first. This will prevent splitting of the wood. Take a look at this picture to see what we mean:
After you have drilled holes you can then screw in the screws using your power drill or by hand.
Step 3 - Attach Top
Place the plywood on top of your frame. Again, drill holes wherever you will be putting in screws to prevent splitting. Three screws on each side should be enough.
Once you have finished screwing in the plywood, take sandpaper and smooth off all corners to get rid of any splintered wood.
That’s it! The next step will be to finish the top, which we will cover in another article.

Follow-up comment rss or Leave a TrackbackI am just wondering, because I live in a townhouse, and my parking lot is a bit far from my front door, how heavy would all of this material be?
Hey David,
It’s not heavy at all. What you can actually do is get the lumbermill to cut the plywood in half for you so that you don’t have to.
Most of them will do it for free, or maybe for a small fee.
The other wood is really light.
Thanks for the question!
just one more thing.
I dont have a power drill, only a screwdriver and I am just wondering, will the store make the board for me if I ask them?
Hey David,
I highly doubt it. Do you know anybody that you could borrow the tools from? If not, you could do it by hand with a screwdriver (and no drill).
It would just be a bit more work.
hey david y dont u just use a big plank of wood from the junk yard or tip thats wot i did and varnished the wood then tipped sand over it and again and again then painted then made hills out of paper mashey then made trees and fake grass lol!! (:
Hey,thanks for this tutorial, I just made this today, I’m just wondering when you are going to do the article about finishing the “top” and could you please email it to me once its done. (although I’ve already subscribed to your mailing list thingy)
once again thanks for this awesome tutorial.
That’s brilliant, but what about the grass you can buy in rolls? How would you put that on/
please reply
Thank you so much! I made this with my dad today and it’s looking really good so far. I can not express how much this has really helped me and my wargaming hobby, and so again, THANK YOU!
Please get that other article making the board is easy for me getting the top looking good is not.
Hi everybody,
I´ve planed to create a modular terrain for 40k with some of my friends and need a bit inspiration
for this project..
If you have any ideas or informations, I´d be very
pleased to hear them!
I´ve been playing 40k for more than 10 years but I
do not have a satisfying terrain yet..
Hope that will change soon.
Greetings
Me again..hm hm.
Has anybody of you ever heard of rapid prototyping? I intend to get me some really detailed eldar terrain out of selfmade cad files.
I work as developer for a small firm, so I hope it might be cheaper when bought by the firm.
Unfortunately I don´t have much time, so it could take some time until it´s done.
But then I´ll send you some photos.
Just curious, as opposed to using wood, i was considering using Polystyrene Foam (styrofoam)that is used for thermal insulation for a gaming terrain board that me and some co-workers could use to play 40k now and then since floorhammer is killer on the back. Has anyone done this before? just wanting to see if its more effective going that route as opposed to a wooden gaming table.
Hey Jon,
You can use Polystrene Foam, but it isn’t as durable and you’ll still need a wooden base to keep it from bending and breaking.
Hey jon,
I´m instantly trying to create a terrain of polystyrol plates. I advice you to take relatively
thin plates so that you can make several layers, which will allow you to cut craters or anything similar into the top plate.
A friend of mine drew even a plan for integrating
a necron crypt in the depth. I hope I´ll find the time to get this thing started, yeah!
Imaging a crypt part in the depth with a sandy stair and a small walk with sleeping necrons on both sides.
Oh, anything else: if you use sprays with polystyrol, make sure that it´s coated proper in any way, cause you won´t like what you get
when you didn´t.
Due the spray solvents the polystyrol could be
molten.
I coated the polystyrol parts either with watermixed glue for wood or with painting for walls for inner rooms.
Yo im not replying to a comment. Just saying i live in worthing (neer brighton /london) and i am asking if i could start a well like a mini miniwargaming club? HELLO
Your Hair is looking good dave
Dave,
This is a great low cost project. Most articles on gaming table are just that, for the whole table!! This can get quite expensive when you consider lumber sturdy enough for legs and supports. What you have done is made it more affordable as well as more protable! I have an even lower cost suggestion for you and others as well that is even more protable! The Army in the States issues wool blankets during soldier training as bedding for it’s troops. You can get these blankets at most military surplus stores fairly cheap. They are made of small fiber wool and died green. The fiber content makes it look much like flocking. This blanket can be laid across any table for instant flocking! It’s weight helps keep it flat and wrinkle free! I have even seen a few gamers staple this to their gaming tables instead of using flock. When you are done gaming just fold or roll it up and put it back in the hall closet.
i want to make a board like that but where is the best place to get the things i need cheap
hey mini war gaming i only 13 and my dad can never find time to use the tools and i dont have enough space for a 2×2 bord.
even worse i always think ill make it all wrong and never have the courige to do it myself
