Dragon is a cool model but in my opinion a poor choice and a waste of points. Models on big creatures are just a point sink and cannon fodder. In 7th edition dragon dreads owned the game but not in 8th edition. Much better is a lord on a CO with HA, SDC, shield POK and a magic weapon

Depending on who I'm facing, I'll take the Dragon for the Terror alone. Though I'm a HE player who's crazy enough to take a Dragon Mage because it's fun. I figure after spending several days painting the dragon, I'm definitely going to use it!

Dragons are not very good man, almost every army has something capable of destroying dragons, be it cannons, or a good spell.

Just shoot him with a cannon or a nasty spell and watch him die like everything else... and kiss 500+ points goodbye. Think about it... any good Empire or Dwarf army is going to have at least 3 cannon and if you are fielding him on a Dragon then likely 6 cannon. Ever see what 6 cannon do to a dragon? At least 4 wounds likely against the rider and dragon with no armor save and if you fail that ward save you take D6 wounds. The first turn the Dragon is dead and the second turn the Dreadlord is likely dead. Of course why would someone shoot everything at the dragon... Well because it is worth 500 points! Too easy to counter for most armies and just too many points into a single model. Spend those points on something better level 4 mage and still have points left for an extra Hydra.
