New to infinity, I have so many questions

Post by jake0271 » Thu Jun 26, 2014 10:41 am

I've started a Yu Jing army. As an aside, I'm thinking of trying to paint them as an Urban response force (or possibly an arctic assault force), as the two color schemes are similar, it won't take much to make both options possible.

My questions are going to, hopefully, be a bit different than most new players. Having seen the game and played it a little, I understand it's balanced, that's what I liked about it after watching the game on this very site.

So, rather than ask what figure is "best", I'd prefer to focus on what roles I'd need to bring to have a good "all around" list for possible tourney play, or if I never do tournaments, have enough to stand tall with the tourney players that I'll be playing against.

Currently, my list has 1 - 2 Forward Observers (one is a remote), usually 2 hackers, at least 2 HI (one has a spitfire), at least 1 MI, my Lieutenant and a few lowly cheerleaders. No doctors or engineers, as I don't know how to fit them in to a 300 point list right now.

I don't have the list handy, but are there specific specialists that you take to tournaments that work well for your lists? I get the customization possibilities, but at this point, I'm trying to figure out what is "normal" to bring to a scenario game.

Thanks for reading...

At a 300 point game I would personally drop one of the hackers and use the pts to field a Doc, or find a way of maybe equipping your other characters with less as a trade off for the pts so that you can upgrade one of your guys as a doctor. Hackers are important but depending on the army you play not as vital (ie playing against Ariadna)

Take it from me, with a small game like this the desire is to say forget the doc I want to cram as much fire/hacking power in as possible, but the game is no fun if you leave a medic behind and then your guys start dropping with no way to revive them. If you were running a 150 pt game then id say that you'd be OK leaving the doc behind as its more of a quick attack game, but once you get to 250 pts and above, having one is vital IMO.

Honestly, when looking at official tournaments (ITS) the organizer is supposed to announce ahead of time which scenarios will be played, which allows you to create a couple of lists that are good for those particular objectives.

For instance, when playing Annihilation games I'm not nearly as concerned about having the number of specialists.
For most other scenarios, I do try to round things out, first because of the objectives of the scenario, and second for Classified Objectives. Believe me, it sucks to roll a couple of Classified's for abilities you don't have on your team.

Other than that, it depends on what models I have available and what I feel I need to support.
For instance, if I"m fielding my Karakuri link or a TAG I'll be prone to make sure I have an engineer or two, and maybe a hacker, rather than a Doctor.

With my Ariadna, I don't really need the hackers, but I'll take a few extra Forward Observers because I like to take the guided missile Traktor Muls.

I also like to combine roles, if I can. I often use Yuriko from the Dark Mist Dire Foes. She's an engineer who can lay mines and D-Charges, but she's also linkable with the Keisotsu. She's my 5th member of the team, giving the HMG a burst of 5 and a +3BS, and she also gets that bonus if I decide to use her Panzerfaust.

Thanks for all the info guys. I do appreciate it. I'll definitely take the doctor and combined roles possibilities into account, moving forward.

I only have about 10 - 12 figures right now and so, my options are somewhat limited.

I think you want to have an ample amount of mobile specialists and some ways to achieve your classified objectives.

So some things to shoot for:

Specialists. If they are infiltrators/Airborne/Mechanized than its even better.
D-Charges. Preferably with some way to get up the board quickly or deploy forward.
Hacker. Two is usually overkill unless you're using an EVO repeater and want the bonuses.
Engineer. Many engineers come with D-Charges, so you can often get both in one model.

After that you'll probably want to make sure you have some killy units for your active turn, and some defensive units for your reactive turn.

Killy = Usually fast movers with big guns, AD/Infiltrating units with big guns, a link team with HMG/missile launchers, etc. TAGs, 4-4 HI, camo/TO/mimetism/ODD units with HMGs, etc. O Yoroi, Daofei HMG, Hac Tao HMG, Shang Ji, Hsien, etc.

Defensive = Snipers, missile launchers, link teams, mine layers, heavy flamers, total reaction remotes. A Husong HMG is a classic defensive model.

Support = any model not directly offensive or defensive...EVO repeaters, baggage remotes, smoke throwers, defensive hackers, doctors and engineers. Support are often your specialists anyway, so they're even more necessary.

I usually like using forward observers for my cheap line specialists. You'll rarely use forward observation unless you brought a guided missile launcher and you're gearing your strategy around it, but the specialist status and the flash pulse are great tools. 32" is a 0 modifier, and a model's WIP is usually higher than his BS in almost every army except Pan O. Flash Pulse can also stop a rampage dead in its tracks, which can really help against Achilles or a TAG at long range. So effectively your FO keisotsu or whatever has +3 at 0-16, and can flash pulse at 16-32.

A paramedic or two can also help give some healing options, especially if you have a pricey HI or something nearby.

That's great info. Thank you very much. I enjoyed your Ariadna force going up against the Military Orders group. Great game and I learned a lot from it.

Thanks! Was definitely a fun game.

I think one lesson that became really apparent in that batrep was that you really need to play to the objectives, which is pretty key in ITS. In fact, sometimes putting your opponent into retreat too early can lose you the game!

I've done that. It embarrasses both sides.
