Space Wolves Tactica

Post by furrby » Fri Jul 12, 2013 4:19 pm

For the All-Father!

I borrowed template from Marit Lage Chaos Space Marines Tactica to create Space Wolves Tactica thread.

It’s time for the 6th edition and this indicated time for Space Wolves Tactica!

This is a combination of theories and my own gaming experiences. I encourage you to critique and add to this with your own experiences.

Before I begin, let me explain the format I will use:

<Name of Unit>

<My opinion on usefulness>
This will simply be a little bar like so:
[IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII] (Awesome! Tournament ready!) 20/20
[IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII] (Meh, a bit situational, but take them for the fun of it) 10/20
[IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII] (Failure... situational at best) 1/20

<Pro's and Con's>

<Explanations, Builds and Tactics>

Got it? Good. Special thanks to Ragnarok1k and Azeebo for establishing the format in their guides. For those following at home, open up your codex to page 92, and follow along as I move page by page, entry by entry.

Let us begin!

Note: Whatever you do, DO NOT QUOTE THE ENTIRE GUIDE! If you do, I will find you, and I will get a new kidney hat. Do feel free to quote small parts of it though.

Army Special Rules

in FOC we get 2 extra HQ slots so we can take 4 HQ !!! (This is big imagine 4 rune priests with 4 x Jaws or Living Lightning.)

Upgrades! Space wolves gives YOU options to buy tons of upgrades but general rule of 6ed is not UPGRADE just buy what is needed and try to have more models in the field. This lets you have redundancy.

1 Wolf Guard in Terminator Armour cost you 33 points making it cheapest terminator in game and same one with TH and SS is 63 points making him most expensive terminator in the game. Try to big one upgrade to each men and not stack them this way you achieve balance and redundancy. Also this gives you INSANE Modeling options. Space Wolves are made for sick modeling.

HQ.1 Unique Characters

Logan Grimnar [IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII]

Pros:
Makes Wolf Guard troops
Terminator armour
Stubborn
Eternal Warrior
Living Legend
Flexible Weapon can swap between power fist and power sword.
Buffer

Cons:
Super expensive
Only 3 Wounds

Tactics:
This guy is great, was great and make stuff happens. His only minus is that you have to build whole army around him. If you take him make your troops wolf guard. But always remember that quantity > quality so don't spam super expensive units.

Njal Stormcaller [IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII]

Pros:
Terminator armour
Psyker that knows all powers (JAWS!)

Cons:
Super expensive
Only 2 Wounds
No eternal Warrior

Tactics:
Njal can work if you like to rely on your luck. Running him in Land Raider and hitting with Tempest enemy flyers yeah... can work but most of the time don't :D. He is super expensive fur a rune priest in terminator armour with 2 wounds. T4 and no eternal warrior makes him die fast. Consider taking 2 Runepriests in terminator armour instead of him.

Ragnar Blackmane [IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII]

Pros:
4+ Invol
+d3 attacks for his unit on charge
can take 2 wolves (extra wounds)

Cons:
No eternal warriors
Massive price tag for 3+ marine

Tactics:
Could go in if you are assault heavy but 6ed nerfed assault so better leave this guy at home.

Ulrik The Slayer [IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII]

Pros:
Priest on Steroids
Buffer

Cons:
No eternal warriors
Massive price tag for 3+ marine
Only 2 Wounds

Tactics:
Could go in if you are assault heavy but 6ed nerfed assault so better leave this guy at home.

Canis Wolfborn [IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII]

Pros:
Pair of Wolf Claws
Makes wolves troops

Cons:
Not really useful guy, wolves are not that great and wolf lord is cheaper in same gear

Tactics:
Yes his name is "Wolf Wolfborn" this guy can work only if you do "logan" thing and build whole army around him. Sadly he is not making Thunder Wolf Cavalery troops choices.

Bjorn the Fell-Handed [IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII]

Pros:
Vehicle
Venerable
S7
If dies, becomes scoring object
5+ invol

Cons:
Vehicle
If dies, becomes scoring object

Tactics:
This guy is expensive and playing with him is tricky because he can make you win scoring missions if you let him die and hold it. It is a vehicle so it is much easier now to destroy it. If he dies all space wolves become fearless which can be handy. This is very hard to execute and in most of matchups he will be a problem.

HQ.2 Regular Characters

Wolf Lord [IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII]

Pros:
Insane customization options
can take TWC! (Thunder Wolf mount)
can take SAGA!

Cons:
Is not rune priest

Tactics:
This guy requires to have thread of his own. Basically you have two types of this guys:
* On TWC mount
* Without TWC mount
TWC mount gives +1 S,W,T , he can take saga making him eternal warrior, thunder hammer and wolf claw or storm shield and become a beast in close combat. Also Wolf Tooth Necklece which makes him hit on 3+ ALWAYS. Bloodthirster You hit me on 4+ and i hit you on 3+ ! DIE you also can take tones of other upgrades and extra wolves for some random wounds and "beast" special rule! :> Insanely good if you are gone go with TWC or stock marines because on his own he can get to the enemy and eat him alive.

Rune Priest [IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII]

Pros:
This is your psyker
Divinition
Jaws
Cheap HQ!

Cons:
Not combat monster

Tactics:
Basically you can do many options with this guy, kit him up with terminator armour for only 20 points and toss him in drop pod with wolf guard and jaws or keep him with long fangs and cast divinition of them or keep fim with long fangs and buy for him "chooser of the slain" and JAWS. Chooser of the slain is REALLY CHOOSER OF THE SLAIN. Because you can take more HQ than other SM chapters you should consider 2 of this guys... even if you will not go with Divinition you can still JAWS or Living Lightning.

Its nice to see other tactica on here besides just Vanilla tactica. 1st of all however why is your opening Lupercal? I know you've read the HH FW book and are in love with it but at least make it a fitting intro like " For the All-Father!" 2nd You seem to just wave off characters you deem as crap. At least for myself when I read tactics one units I want to know their capabilities in the event I decide to take them simply saying "assaults were nerfed(which honestly isn't true) so leave this guy at home" doesn't help people understand the uses for the character.

If you want to do exactly what Marit did you need feedback from the community and take that into account along side your own experiences. Laying it out how you have it makes it more of an opinion based(which we both know not a lot of people agree with your opinion on here) thread rather than actual fact.
I fall into a dark hole
And I can't come out
Do you know if Merlin did exist
Or Frodo wore the ring
Did Corum kill the gods
Or where's the wonderland
Which young Alice had seen
Or was it just a dream
I knew the answers
Now they're lost for me

Your format is seriously awful. If you want this stickied, you'll need to use complete sentences and proper grammar.

I would like to see less opinion on the units / their rules and more of a dissertation of how they can be used. 'Tactics' should be from a more academic perspective.
