Spray Paints as Primers

Post by Numbsi » Thu Dec 06, 2012 1:17 pm

I have painted very few models and one thing that has started to bother me is what i may be mistaken for is what is a primer?

I have simply been spraying my units with normal spraypaints and painting over that. I is only over close observation i can see the paint run and paints unevenly.

Where do I get a proper primer. GW spray paints aren't that easy to get hold of.

I use Krylon flat black as my primer. It's always treated me well.

I got a can of rust-oleuam. Looks exactly like the one pictured above. Must by about $9?

For that much, you're better off simply getting Army Painter or GW spray paint.

i've never used rustoleam before but the tremclad i posted is much better than army painter or gw. and yeah it typically costs around 8-9 dollars.

i use krylon. Army painter I have nothing but problems with the primer flaking off of the minis (even when minis are cleaned properly). GW is decent, though they are expensive.

I like krylon because it has a rotating nozzle so you can go vertical or horizontal spray. I also use grey as my primer because it works a lot better than straight black or white. Grey is a good medium because you can achieve the dark muted tones of black primer, while also allowing for a bright, bold spectrum that white creates.

Do you use the Krylon primer? or another paint? I have been having some issues with army painter and may switch.

You'll want the flat Krylon paints. Black is probably the best, and is less than 5 USD a can.
