Re: Blood angel battleforce
IMO Astorath and Chaplains are incredible options, even more when making an army focused on the Death Company. Other players might otherwise suggest a librarian with jump pack or Mephiston (which are great choice). BA is in my opinion a great choice for any beginner, mainly because it's relatively cheap to build a list if you focus on jump infantry. Anyways, Astorath and a chaplain are great choice (your friend can even use the chaplain as a proxy for librarian, since the current models aren't that incredible). Your friend however should carefully choose if he wants to play mechanized, infantry or jump infantry. One thing people tend to suggest about the BA battleforce is to take off the jump pack from the DC and use the tactical marines as additionnal DC, and then put then all in the rhino, giving you a 10 man DC squad. However it doesn't fit mee since I prefer my DC with jump packs. Otherwise, he might use the tactical marines as Assault marines withouth jump packs, which is another great option.
To get back to Astorath, if your friend use it, he can use him to make pure DC army lists. These lists are the cheapest, but you tend to have few models on the board, which can be thought to handle againts shooting armies. An idea is to use a mix of DC and Assault squads. Hope that helps

Re: Blood angel battleforce
Mephiston is good points per dollar and is awesome, so I would go for him.
Astorath really is not as great as being made out.
Firstly he is easy to kill, as he T4 and can be instant killed.
Then his stats are not crazy cc god level.
Finally you need to consider the boosts for the entire army, that of extra DC squads and red thirst. Neither is so amazing an option, DC are unruly and can not score, red thirst is not so important if you have priests which you will have anyway and especially if you have mostly DC.
Librarians are great. Chaplains are good and help, if you mean reclusiarch.
You will have a DC box set and an assault marine box set. Buy some meltas and you can make some prettyly decorated squad of 10 marines with fist and 2 meltas. This is a good standard squad to have. Then add some priests and a HQ and you will be flying else.
Else you are looking have multiple Las/plas razorbacks with 5 assault marines maybe with a meltagun.

I'd probably drop astorath for a reclusiarch or libby, and use the points for some more firepower...

Some people might disagree with me, but a unit of 5 Devastators with 4 Rocket Launchers has been a brilliant unit. Two units firing into a Mob of 30 Boyz will either make them run or a uneffective unit within 2 turns. It's a great Anti-Tank (S8) and awesome Marine or Chaos or Tau Killer with AP3, mainly insta-killing and with the 48'' it's usually out of range of quite few other shooting squads (granted, not all, but that's what the Assault Marines are for
)

In a pure infantry list and if they have FNP they are great.blahman212 wrote:Some people might disagree with me, but a unit of 5 Devastators with 4 Rocket Launchers has been a brilliant unit. The issue for me would finding missile launchers and DoW.

How'd you mean finding Missile Launchers?MFletch wrote:In a pure infantry list and if they have FNP they are great.blahman212 wrote:Some people might disagree with me, but a unit of 5 Devastators with 4 Rocket Launchers has been a brilliant unit. DoW is a problem. I've played a few games with them, and they come in soon enough, they can start firing and it's good. It's getting them to fire before being shot down though.
