"The Year of Ending" is an unofficial, player-driven, worldwide campaign. It follows the timeline found in the main 40K Rulebook (pp.126-129). Each week battles will rage across the galaxy in different locations. Find new friends, set up battles, and play 40K all year in this, the first year of the "Year of Ending!" Players are encouraged to set up events, post pics, tell stories, and generally expand on their 40K games. Let everyone you know about this event and direct them here, to Miniwargaming.com

The "Year of Ending" is an unofficial, worldwide campaign. We're working on a brief intro, but the skinny is that the 40K Rulebook contains a timeline for the first year of the 40th Millenium.

Looking at the timeline, I counted and found there were 52 individual "historical" notes. I thought, "Wouldn't it be cool if players were to follow that timeline with games for the whole year?"

Well, in my excitement I posted a video on youtube.com:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UJB8IbLUImM

Well, I got nibbles and decide to go for it! There's a few vids of me trying to figure out how to do such an event (or events, as it were).

That is the start of things. The crew here at miniwargaming took pity and are letting me use the forum. I'm hoping to grow this event and well, I guess we'll see how the year goes...

Please post if you're interested in meeting other players under the "YOE" banner. It's all about 40K. Play right out of 5ed., fight historical scenarios, whatever! Play at home, play in a store, nothing matters but 40K! I'll be doing intro segments for each week on youtube to set tone, etc.

The YOE starts on New Year's Eve, er, Day, at about 12:01 am.

I'm really hoping to make it a collaborative experience, versus me just going on and on. I'm not that exciting, but I've seen some great stuff, played some great games. I think there's alot of potential, but it is more player driven then propelled by me, or something that GW would have produced.

There you have it, in a nutshell.

This sounds amazing! If only you where to do such a thing for fantasy! I would make sure that dwarfs are fit to fight every battle in which they would be faced in! heh I really hope this gets going you picked a really awesome community to do this in as Miniwargaming is like you said in one of your videos "AMAZING".

Good luck with this concept!

Sounds like a great idea. All we need is a bit of structure... as in... do we call DIBS on certain dates? Or is it just a free for all, using the Historical Dates as a reference point of the battle, then afterwords, making in depth battle reports, with an almost Role Playing tone?

If we're going the route of DIBS... i TOTALLY call Dibs on

Matt will be setting some sections up for us, I just sent him a list of the major things I think the section will need.

DIBS aren't necessary, but I think that if a time or event really gets your imagination and gaming desire going, pursue it! For my "definite" part, I'm giving a fluffy bunny kinda vid on youtube, and maybe some ideas. I'll start the time/event thread on the appropriate week, but then players should be generating most of the content.

For example, Week 1 is 744.M41. So, at midnight (EST) on January 1, 2009, I'll start a thread with that date in the subject line. I'll list the rulebook page number in the post, so folks can follow and also get ideas for what's coming up (someone might want to do a larger project, or find a special scenario, etc.).

I would encourage people to post in the appropriate area, say if you do the project attached to the "Repent" scenario for Week 1. Put the 40K date, and then a project title or like description. That way, people can find specific content with haste.

I don't mean for posts to be long, it's just a lot of info to transmit as more people come on board, and all of us figure out how to pull this ridiculously awesome event off!

i have a suggestion, everyone in on this submits where and what
then submit your battle reports by a certain date each week.
then GK could create a narrative based on the results. or create your own narrative on what happened then submit them to GK who could then edit and compile them into a mission log for our reading pleasure :)
with the narrative in place it will open up windows to more conflicts, maybe even battlefleet gothic scenarios? other speacialist games set in 40k?
i like the DnD approach where nothing is set in stone, and the books are there to guide you along on your own adventure.
imagine week 52, terra falls to orks? you never know.with this game its strategy and dice rolls, anything can happen, and YOE idea is fantastic, as soon as my army is finished i would definitly jump on this grand campaign.

The Year of Ending is based on the Time of Ending in the main rulebook, so we're really fighting "set in stone" conflicts, but not individual battles.

For example, in the Eye of Terror event, Chaos comes out having an upper hand. However, they would have lost some battles. So, during Week 52, which is the real-time date for us, we'd all play in the EoT. However, the historical results of the final conflict would stand. I'd love to have GW publish our stuff, but this would potentially stand against existing story lines. On the other hand, see a bit farther down...

I'll post further on organization and whatnot, I'm trying to also get ready for company here at Planet C-ville.

Now, it seems as though some players seem to be interested not in battles within existing fluff, but a new worldwide campaign, where the winners and losers are up in the air.

Uh, I think I just got an idea for "Year of Ending 2010."

Awesome. Ridiculously awesome. :D
