Armour Saves?

In 8th, again

and sorry, another newbie question although this one is likely down more to my math skillz :/

Can anyone walk me through how armour saves work? I *thought* I got it, and I read the 1d4chan overview of them but erm I think I'm just missing it, I don't get the math =/

here's a for instance,

my ratling gun got off 3 hits on my son's necromancer, one wounded. His Necro has a +1 save for armour, the strength of the hits is S4, and I'm stuck with two conflicting (to me) bits of information! BRB p.43 has S4 hits giving an adjustment to S4 hits as -1. The BRB also says that a model can never have a save of 1+ (of any kind) for any reason and even then a roll of 1 is always a failure. Ok, so that contradicts what the army book says the model has! Or do we just assume the army book > brb?!

Also since the armour save roll has to be equal to or greater than the model's save, does this mean, in the above example, his roll come out to a 0 in this instance? If he was hit by something under S4, and he rolled a 1 (his listed save) it would still fail?!

anyway thanks for help, trying to work out math is not my strong suit and this system seems to be backwards (anybody remember the THAC0 table??)

A 1+ save is really the same thing than a 2+ save except that you will keep a good save for longer if you are struck by high strength attacks.

So, in your case, the necromancer is hit by a strength 4 hit. It means that his save will be diminished by one. It means it becomes a 2+ save. A one 1+ save always failed on a roll of 1. A 2+ save also fails on a roll of 1. So there isn't much that is changed in this case. But let's say that the Necromancer is hit by a strength 6 hit. A strength 6 hit means that the save his diminished by -3. It means it becomes a 4+ save which is still relatively good (50% of success). But if he had a 2+ save instead, it would be diminished to 5+ which is significantly worse (33% of success). Do you see what I mean?

However, I'm not really sure how a Necromancer can have a 1+ save. A Vampire yes, but I doubt it for a Necromancer.

apparently he took nightshroud armour that gave a 1+ save

and I guess I'll have to think about it for a bit lol Playboy says he gets it so maybe he can explain it to me again :)

No problem! However, I think that Playboy should read the text again. I've got the codex and it gives a +1 bonus to the existing armor save. If it has no armor, it would give a 6+ armor save. I think this is very different than what he says it is. :P
