Good way to begin

Post by SweetSorrow » Tue Mar 13, 2012 9:41 pm

I found out about a huge following of flames of war at my LGS and got shown a demo. It seems like an interesting hobby and would like to get some of my own to use next time. However im totally lost on factions, which eras better, etc. I'm liking the idea of Poland,Hungary, or Germany but im not sure as i know nothing of there playstyles. Can anyone suggest an army to this noob that is Elite, less units higher quality. Maybe some tanks but not to many. suggestions? Thanks for the help. :D

I'm not very experienced but i know the flames of war section moves REALLY slowly, In the late war period the German army can be a very elite force, especially SS, they also have very good, expensive Armour.

If you want to learn more about FOW head over to dakkdakka.com's flames of war section.Which is much more active then the one here. Here is a good start though. http://www.dakkadakka.com/wiki/en/Start ... _War_Force

Thanks for the help. Im so excited last night i went to my lgs and borrowed a family friend's 82nd Airborne list from turning tide and it was a blast. I think it was more fun than 40k  Only downside was figuring out why Airborne shouldn't be taking on Panzer divisoions..

First thing would be what period do the people play were you live. If they play late and only late war then no need to buy a mid war army. Whee I like I can play all three periods. Early war being the least played. Most like to play mid and late war. Just like 40k if you play elite armies you will be out numbered. The game is all about objectives. You want to run a SS panzer list go ahead if you can not cover your objectives and take the enemies being elite is not all that good. Find nation that you like and look at their lists. Go from there and you will have fun.

101st is a great army. Nice thing with Airborne is you can usually use them in mid and late war with just the Support options changing.

The Geman Paratroopers (Fallschmajer and I know that is spet wrong), are freaking awesome. They're a pretty good army and win a lot of tournaments in my area. Airborne in general is a nice elite army, but as it was said, taking objectives can be hard.

I would suggest with the 101st doing the airborne assualt mission. I just find it so much fun to play with and against.

No worries. Good to hear that you are having fun with your army. Once you find the way you want to run your army the more comfortable it will be come and the easier it will be to fight against different armies.

Just remember to use cover a lot with them when advancing as well make sure if you are defending, you sit back and wait. It's important to be dug in with them.

Also, make sure no one is cheaping out on you with the terrain, the board should be at least 50% covered with Flames of War.

Yeah, I've seen that a few times, but even if you look on the Flames of War Website, there is tons of terrain. Look at famous battles, especially with the 101st. Normandy isn't a plain, it's a dense vegitation, with villars bocage and buildings etc...... The board should have a ton of terrain. Next time I play a game I will post some pictures so you can see what I mean. It makes the games so much more fun as well.
