First Primal Horizon battle report (optionally pic heavy)

Post by salvadorjer » Wed Jun 17, 2009 12:29 pm

The first post is while I wait for photobucket to upload the 77 pics of the battle+notes.
edition is beta 2.4
Here are the lists:
The Shield
Sniper
Commander with laser rifle
x3conscript gunmen with 1vet who has the gauss rifle
total:162 pts

Marauders
x5dogs and 1alpha-male
x3marauder gunners with 1marauder machine-gunner
Marauder boss
total:163pts
Pretty even points-wise.

I always work up storylines to my battles so I will edit this post after the entire report is finished.

PS: for those of you who wonder why there are pictures of my calculator, it is because I only have 1d12 and it thus simulates the random numbers (and yes, in french).

Ok, here are the models:
The Shield
Image

and the Marauders
Image
the Alpha-Male is the one with some paint, the rest should be obvious.

Here is the battlefield:
Image

It is roughfly (that looks awkward but is I believed spelled correctly) a 3' by 3' gaming area.

Here it is after deployment
Image
http://i158.photobucket.com/albums/t104 ... G_0610.jpg
http://i158.photobucket.com/albums/t104 ... G_0611.jpg
http://i158.photobucket.com/albums/t104 ... G_0612.jpg
http://i158.photobucket.com/albums/t104 ... G_0613.jpg
I am sorry that this presentation may seem tedious but it's purpose is to collect raw data for the rules.
COMMENT1: There is no suggested size or distance
The two forces started out 19'' away from one another (or more depending on the case)
http://i158.photobucket.com/albums/t104 ... G_0614.jpg

Marauders turn1
The game starts with the maurauders who advance on their counterparts (both squads run for the gunners were out of range and the dogs were cc)
The dogs only get 9 movement so not the +1 modifier to be hit (important later)
The Marauders run to take closer cover.

COMMENT2: It is not specified (I believe) whether we can pre-measure before an action or not, I assumed yes wich is why the gunners ran. (20"from sniper with 18 range rifles)

End of Marauder turn 1:
Image
The marauder gunners appear to be in good cover from the conscript gunners.
http://i158.photobucket.com/albums/t104 ... G_0617.jpg

The Shield turn 1:
But not from the sniper
http://i158.photobucket.com/albums/t104 ... G_0618.jpg
Luckily for the Marauders, a miracle occurs:
http://i158.photobucket.com/albums/t104 ... G_0620.jpg
and so no one dies due to the heavy sniper rifle (deadly in pre-game tests)
The conscript gunners and the Commander open fire on the dogs
5+and2 for cover makes for 7+ needed to hit.
And they all oblige with a devastating 7;12;7 (3shots 3 kills)
none of which affect the character.
http://i158.photobucket.com/albums/t104 ... G_0623.jpg
http://i158.photobucket.com/albums/t104 ... G_0624.jpg
http://i158.photobucket.com/albums/t104 ... G_0625.jpg
But it's not over, that was only the riflemen, now the gauss trooper rolls a perfect 12 to hit, frying another one.
http://i158.photobucket.com/albums/t104 ... G_0627.jpg
http://i158.photobucket.com/albums/t104 ... G_0626.jpg
http://i158.photobucket.com/albums/t104 ... G_0628.jpg
The leader however gets the worst roll of the group (how did this man ever survive the age of survival?)
http://i158.photobucket.com/albums/t104 ... G_0629.jpg
http://i158.photobucket.com/albums/t104 ... G_0630.jpg
Unsurprisingly the dogs are suppressed with a 5 and 6 rolled.
http://i158.photobucket.com/albums/t104 ... G_0631.jpg
http://i158.photobucket.com/albums/t104 ... G_0632.jpg
(sorry for the scribbly writing).

End of The Shield Turn1:

Marauder turn 2:
This is a very immobile turn for the Marauders. The gunners stay where they are to fire to full (and appreciable effect on the sniper) whereas the dogs are suppressed and cannot take action.

The gunners open fire on the sniper.
http://i158.photobucket.com/albums/t104 ... G_0634.jpg
a ten is rolled (note that while he may have 5 in cover, he has no armor) so a 6+ and a 5 modifier makes for an 11, he is hit.
(notes like this will have "note" written in front if you wish to skip them)
http://i158.photobucket.com/albums/t104 ... G_0635.jpg
COMMENT3: It is unclear in the rulebook on wether a hit is 1 away (as in the morale section) or 2 away as in the (probably outdated) demo video and the overwatch section.
Either way, the question is left to rest as the machine gunner
http://i158.photobucket.com/albums/t104 ... G_0636.jpg
shows the scout how it's done
http://i158.photobucket.com/albums/t104 ... G_0637.jpg
"note"
http://i158.photobucket.com/albums/t104 ... G_0638.jpg
http://i158.photobucket.com/albums/t104 ... G_0639.jpg

End of Marauder turn 2:
Image

The Shield turn 2:
WARNING THIS TURN CONTAINS SCENES OF INTENSE VIOLENCE, BLOODSHED, AND GENERAL OWNAGE.
The conscript gunners continue their very static approach and fire upon the marauder gunnmen.
http://i158.photobucket.com/albums/t104 ... G_0642.jpg
The marauders are over 50% in cover with a 2 modifier but most are not only in cover but out of line of sight aswell, the rules do not treat this effectively as demonstrated later (and a "bloody" mess it is indeed)
http://i158.photobucket.com/albums/t104 ... G_0643.jpg
The gunners do not dissapoint and again hail a perfect 3 kill (2 were visible and the boss's head was too)
"note"

"note"
http://i158.photobucket.com/albums/t104 ... G_0645.jpg
a character is hit
will finish later

Randomely determined, the character hit is the machine gunner, who takes a fleshwound.
COMMENT4: can a person in a squad that is out of line of sight be hit?

The gunner with the gauss rifle fires and gets a hit aswell,
http://i158.photobucket.com/albums/t104 ... G_0650.jpg
http://i158.photobucket.com/albums/t104 ... G_0651.jpg
hitting randomely the machine gunner (poor lad) and rolling an 11: a critical hit.

http://i158.photobucket.com/albums/t104 ... G_0655.jpg
COMMENT5: If a player rolls all the dice at once (as some do with color ones) there is a possibility of unresolved exess wounds if all non characters or all characters are killed.
The leader has yet to fire,
http://i158.photobucket.com/albums/t104 ... G_0658.jpg
http://i158.photobucket.com/albums/t104 ... G_0660.jpg
who promptly dishes out more death with a nice square 11 to hit
the machine gunner is hit again (man does this guy have a target sign painted on his forehead) and is killed.
http://i158.photobucket.com/albums/t104 ... G_0661.jpg
http://i158.photobucket.com/albums/t104 ... G_0662.jpg
this is a scary notion:
"note"
http://i158.photobucket.com/albums/t104 ... G_0663.jpg

The Marauder boss is suppressed due to failing no less than 4 morale tests:
http://i158.photobucket.com/albums/t104 ... G_0656.jpg
I warned you about the death involved in this turn.

Endo of The Shield turn 2:
Image

Marauders turn 3:
Having lost more than 25% losses in points (obviously) the Marauders had to take a morale test:
http://i158.photobucket.com/albums/t104 ... G_0664.jpg
they pass with a 10.

Being no longer supressed, the dogs charge, they thus get a move of 8"+d9"
this is enough to get them into close combat with their adversaries.
http://i158.photobucket.com/albums/t104 ... G_0667.jpg
http://i158.photobucket.com/albums/t104 ... G_0668.jpg

COMMENT6: It is not clear as to whether a squad (A) can shoot units (from squad B) that are not in close combat when other units (from squad B) are in cc. Basically: can you shoot, with no risk of hitting your troops, a squad when not all units are in cc.

Only one dog arrives in close combat, so he attacks and kills his opponent.
http://i158.photobucket.com/albums/t104 ... G_0673.jpg
http://i158.photobucket.com/albums/t104 ... G_0674.jpg

This phrase is unclear, can you eliminate anyone, or if you die someone else must be in cc? Please clarify this.
http://i158.photobucket.com/albums/t104 ... G_0675.jpg
I have treated this as the death of the gauss member and end of close combat.
http://i158.photobucket.com/albums/t104 ... G_0678.jpg

End of Marauder turn 3:
Image

The Shield Turn 3:
Now for the dubious Marauder victory: having lost over 25% of their troops in points, The Shield must make a morale test on 4+ which is promptly failed.
http://i158.photobucket.com/albums/t104 ... G_0681.jpg
The Shield's determination waivered and they cut their losses, leaving the field to the Marauders.

Post battle impresion: cover wasn't nearly as useful/effective as i expected, however, most of the rolls were surprisingly high so a lot of damage was dealt but I believe that was luck.(such as the conscript gunnmen that never failed to kill)
The main points that need covering are comment 4 and the phrase about cc that needs explaining.

I like the pics include in the report, nicely done.

Very nice battle report, i particularly enjoy your marauders (what models are they?) and i would have to suggest that you post less pictures and not have them in links. It was just tedious to open. But all in all it was a great battle report and i cannot wait to see the rest.

I can't understand why no one has replied. That was an amazing looking set of minis, (not so much the battlefield!) and the report was well structured and the report was well planned and written. Shame on those who look over this thread and ignore it. Shame on you.

Okay just got back into the primal horizon mindset.
There was a reason the thread was labelled optionally pic heavy. I know it is tedious to open which is why i posted the non fun/essential pictures in the links so someone could just read it as anyone would for a battle report. Remembering that this is in the beta stage, I tried to include as much data as possible as well as my thoughts and comments (hence the links and appropriate sections).
The battlefield was just what i had in hand (maybe someone should tell me if the terrain was too loose aside from not great to look at).models used were: space marines tactical marines, a scout and a devastator Sargent. Marauders were from the cawdor necromunda models (building a genestealer cult using the BOLS mini-dex). The dogs were wargs (now painted) from the isengard army i am doing as a small side.
My suggestion for gameplay satisfaction would be to make the morale test (when under 25%) harder to miss but with an increasing penalty each turn. The game just siddenly ended in a bout of luck on one side and "unluck" for the other.
