Crazy (which I am not new to the pts cost) that in order to recieve a +1 benefit for an SV it cost 20pts for my CCS and 30pts for my Vets. Tomorrow I am using a CCS + 3 Vet Squads and equipping them w/ Carapace b/c of the battle I am in. When I total up the #'s I have basically purchased another unit (a Basilisk for instance).

This unfortunatly is why many tend to ignore this upgrade. The problem is that for the price of that +1 you could have 3melta guns, or if its on 2squads there is a squad of troops for your blob with a pw. The thing is for guard even with that +1 most often youll not get saves anyway so does it even help? Your better off having more guys. Or another tank.

Yeah, carapace always seemed a bit meh to me. As opposed to camo cloaks, and hiding in cover for a 3+ cover save, with the option of going to ground for a 2+.
Now THAT can be worth the points.

well, I like taking it on my GK acolytes, since their smaller units anyway and I 'd like to make them more survivable

Consideringhow bad my Son's Nids just annihilated me in today's Cities of Death battle and the fact the Carapace did not give much in the way of helping I would definitely say pass it up. I have been using this week of my vacation to experiment with some options I normally do not use. Today was a brutal lesson and also ended my winning streak that has been on going since December. Of course he had to call our gamming center and some of our gaing club members to inform then of my demise. Lmbo! Oh well there is always tomorrow's battle.

In short I was soundly beaten. I have been trying some new patterns of squads (not that that is an excuse). CCS 3 Vets 3 LR 2 Chimeras 1 Armoured Sentinel And got annihilated in an Cities of Death match. Tomorrow we are going to have a bit of fun. The scenario will be like in the 1st 'Starship Troopers' in which I'll be fielding a troops based army in an out post. He'll get 500pts more than what I'll field. Going to see how long I can withstand.

You guys say what you will, I won't go into battle without a Veteran Squad with Carapace armour and 3 Plasma guns in a Chimera. In the last 3 games I've played, they were game changers, and they always perform well for me.
They were able to hold off an Eldar advance in a choke point and shrugged off dozens of AP5 wounds and saved themselves from Get's Hot!, in addition to taking out 2 Wave Serpents and about 10 Dire Avengers.
Yes, it's an expensive unit, but it does wonders for me.

I cannot deny that the Dice Gods were not w/ me the other day. I wasn't hitting, wounding or saving very well or not at all. I use Vets a lot so it isn't a knock on them.

& that is usually what I do or add a Basilisk or something to that effect. Like I said I was just field testing it, but I won't say that I wouldn't ever use Carapace again; just would obviously rather put more boots/tread on the ground verses an expensive +1 Save.

Just on the topic of the Doctrines, I was wondering about the Demolitions Doctorine it sounds very interesting with the Demo Charge, but I'm wondering if it is as awesome as it sounds.

'Doctrines' went out w/ the last IG Codex. Now you can use a demo charge when you get a SWS under the IP. Look on pg 97. It'll cost ya 20 pts but it has come in handy a time or two. Then of course we play a lot of Cities of Death at 1500 to 2k on a 4'X4' board just for the close up in your face battles.

Vets still have doctrines, dunno what codex you're playing. The demo charge is fantastic, and the melta bombs are just bonus. I consider the upgrade a staple for any squad(s) of melta vets in your army.
