Hunter Orcs and Gundabad

HUNTER ORCS

Image

" The Hunter orcs were a ruthless group of Orcs who followed Fimbul and Yazneg, who served Azog. The Hunter Orcs that roam the lands east of The Misty Mountains are a particularly aggressive kind of Orc. In the Third Age, the Orcs of Angmar yet again claimed it as their capital, which was one of the reasons for the dwarves' special hatred of this people. After the fall of Angmar, Gundabad remained an Orc stronghold, until it was cleansed of orcs during the War of the Dwarves and Orcs. However, hordes of orcs seem to have trickled back to this hotly contested strongpoint and fortified it anew during the events of The Hobbit, menacing the Wilderland for yet another time. Azog, was the supreme commander of the Orcs from Gundabad, and presumably the northern Misty Mountains."

Please feel free to add your own tactics and c&c is welcome!

Now why would want to play a Hunter orcs army?

Pros
• Very powerfull and medium/high level heroes with high fight and attacks (very uncommon for orcs)
• Generally, very good Strength and attacks across the board
• Fast moving with wargs
• Acess to bowfire
• can get some nasty rules
• Gorgeous models

Cons
• lack of professional troops, yes poor fight value in most(except main heroes)
• very light armoured generally
• poor courage as regular orcs
• more expensive than regular orcs almost to the cost of elite cost armies
• acess to no spears and hardly no shields

Final verdict: 9/10

=====================================================

b]Azog[/b]

Image

"Azog was a mighty Orc chieftain and a defiler of the dead. He was slain long ago, at the hands of Dain Ironfoot, and never heard of again. Now, however, rumours tell of an Orc matching his description who rides a white Warg..."

Pros

• Great supply of might/will
• Very good profile stat with very high fight value, Strength and good courage value
• Burly
• wounds heroes regardless of defence on a 3+
• acess to the white warg giving more chances for more might supply
• two handed mace

Cons

• Expensive by himself, more with the warg
• Only 1 Fate
• low defence value, this right here can be a big bummer for an already very expensive model

Tactics

• This is one of those characters who´s cost need to be very well thought for a list in the making, hes a beast in battle by his own right and can match even the most powerfull heroes in battle by having a very high fight value.
Although I recommend partly to take on the thick of battle I would avoid very nasty fights and if he loses a combat with an already low defence and 1 fate point, azog can be in serious trouble if this happens.

• Play for the kill: the main reason for you to have azog is to kill a particular very powerfull heroe, normally the defiler can take on any heroe in 1 turn or 2.
Hes also dangerous against other targets since he hold a two handed weapon and got the burly rule (dont receive the -1 to win fight penalty, but gains the +1 to wound).

• mounted is the best: I do highly advice you to take him mounted, since it gives you two advantages: cavalry rule and more might store.
Hes already a beast and more beast he gets when he pin down targets and get twice the attacks vs infantry.
Also bumping more might to use means you can control the costs around the field and use the might to counter of flee heroic moves or ensure a kill watever the cost....

• low in numbers: main concern is that playing with azog will make your hunter orc army which is squish even less in numbers, which can be bad for you somehow..
If you play azog, try to put as many hunter orcs on foot as you can since you as an orc need numbers to be reliable...

Final verdict: 7/10

b]Bolg[/b]

Image

"Ruthless and brutal as his father..."

Pros

• Great supply of might/will
• Very good profile stat with very high fight value, Strength and good courage value
• Burly
• has defence 7
• two handed pick
• harbinger of death

Cons

• Expensive by himself
• Only 1 Fate
• no acess to warg

Tactics

• same tactics apply to Bolg as for azog with small diferences
• run into the thick of it: unlike Azog, bolg got a very high defence making this guy a proper heroe for the total thick of the melee, I do actually advice as you prefer to kill foes first to buff up his stats with his special rule even more before facing heroes
• whos the boss lads!? When he kills a number of models hes almost like aragorn, which makes bolg very beasty like in combat and nice to deal with horde armies as he wreck their face very easily..
• no mount for him: he dont have mount which can be a bummer, so hes rathr slow, so keep in mind for the start of the game and head him where the fight is thickest without wasting time
• no model: sadly got rules but no model, gw over thought the model and PJ screwed them up showing a complete diferent visual model, the current bolg model is just a regular orc general.

Final verdict: 8/10

Fimbul the hunter orc

Image

"Fimbul is a vicious fighter and an experienced tracker who will doggedly pursue an enemy without ever tiring of the chase..."

Pros

• Great supply of might
• Very good fight value, good courage value
• expert rider
• hunt master rule
• cheap

Cons

• Only 1 Fate
• Only 1 Will
• low defence

Tactics

• Hes very cheap and extremely usefull, unlike most models and quite uncommon for orcs, hes an expert rider.
• Take him mounted since most of his rules are purely beg to get him mounted on a warg and be usefull.
• His special rule allow him not to suffer penalty from charging through terrain
• Hes highly unusual with an high fight value for "a regular orc captain" so hes quite decent to deal with enemy captains and lesser troops.
• I do recommend him to deal with the random stuff that may happen in the field of battle although like azog I dont recommend him for the thick of the fight since he get no boosts like many blades special rules like other captains.
• For his rules and cost hes the character that is a must for any hunter orc army

Final verdict: 10/10

]Narzug[/b]

Image

"Narzug is an expert shot even from the saddle of a racing Fell Warg. "

Pros

• Great supply of might
• Very good shooting value for an orc standart, good courage value
• expert rider
• lethal aim
• cheap

Cons

• Only 1 Fate
• Only 1 Will
• low defence
• orc bow

Tactics

• Hes very cheap and usefull, unlike most models and quite uncommon for orcs, hes an expert rider.
• He can be given mount.
• His special rule can be tricky but usefull a might point for free to be used on his bow, pitty his bow is weak.
• For his rules and cost hes the character that is a good boost for any hunter orc army, and mainly cause he got more might to bear.

Final verdict: 9/10

Yazneg

Image

"Yazneg is the brutish and cruel captain of the Hunter Orcs. He leads this vicious band of creatures in an effort to track down and kill Thorin’s Company – and anything else that gets in his way."

Pros

• Great supply of might
• good courage value
• expert rider
• lance
• cheap

Cons

• Only 1 Fate
• Only 1 Will
• low defence
• his special rule

Tactics

• Hes very cheap and got a bit more killing capacity than most thx to his lance upgrade and unlike most models and quite uncommon for orcs hes an expert rider.
• Take him mounted since hes more beasty like in combat and benefit from lance better.
• His special rule is tricky and annoying, its usefull with his sacrifice as Azog pass courage stand fast test and other orc captains on that turn re-roll breaking tests, but sacrificing this guy for it and need to start his turn next to azog to work, its awfully bad rule :/
• Hes weak on fight value unlike Fimbul as he stands more on a standart of an orc captain, but being a bit more easier to kill stuff he mitigates more or so that lack of fight value.
• He wears and a two handed axe, so just in case you wanna do piercing attack in a combo fight with other character with higher fight value, nothing wont hurt you much from it with low defence already anyway but I would avoid using piercing attacks as you want characters to win fights rather than losing them...
•So take him as an enhanced captain on warg (since he dont have many blades rule) his lance its quite viable as an alternative.

Final verdict: 7/10

Hunter orc Captain

Image

"The Captains of the hunter Orcs serve as the right hand of Azog, a relentless band who will stop at nought to slay his quarry. ."

Pros

• decent stat line
• many blades rule
• cheap
• can get acess to gear

Cons

• Only 1 Fate
• low defence

Tactics

• Hes very cheap and incredibly good to fight in battle, I would suggest hi mto go bare on foot so he can benefit form his many blades rule which can bump him to a mighty 3A model. Although with fight 4 dont seem much, this guy can be really nasty and combined that he just cost a bit more than a goblin captain with an already defence 5, hes quite an awesome deal for it.
• He can be dangerous to fight enemy heroes cause of his annormal amount of attacks for a captain.
• Hes best used protected by orcs then when the line crash to cut the enemy lines and open holes.

Final verdict: 9/10

Gundabad orc Captain

Image

"Bloody-minded and brutal soldiers whose strength and resilience dwarfs that of their peers, the Captains of Gundabad are the most sturdy and ruthless Orcs in the Misty Mountains. These are the warriors whom the greatest Orc warlords surround themselves with"

Pros

• high defence and Strength
• can get acess to shield increasing more his defence
• ancient enemies rule
• gorgeous model

Cons

• low fight value for an heavily armoured guy
• expensive as compared to an uruk captain fully geared and still with less fight value)

Tactics

• Unlike most hunter orcs, these guys are the bulky top heavy on orc class in the army, they play diferently as the hunter orcs and if you want the thick of melee, these are the guys youre looking for.
• His special rule kinda useless since his sword can feint already and elves have higher fight value so meh, can only justify vs regular dwarf warriors with fight 4 without using the sword´s feint or you convert to use another weapon(I dont recomment converting to axes since his high defence is what justify the most taking this guy in an hunter orc army)
• His special rule
• Another good reference its his anormal Strength value of 5, so hes quite a puncher to creates holes on the enemy armour.

Final verdict: 8/10

Gundabad orc warriors

Image

"Regimented and trained to a high standard, the Gundabad Orc Swordsman are bloody-minded and powerful fighters."

Pros

• high defence and Strength
• can get acess to shields and spears
• ancient enemies rule
• gorgeous model

Cons

• expensive
• poor fight value

Tactics

• Unlike most hunter orcs, these guys are the bulky top heavy on orc class in the army, they play diferently as the hunter orcs and if you want the thick of melee, these are the guys youre looking for.
• Their special rule compensates more on these guys over the captain mainly with the spear guy, so both front and back rank actually re-rolls 1s to wound vs elves and dwarves where most armies "cant feint with spears"
• They got a decent punch like uruk hai, its just bad they got fight 3, still good courage standart and remain just like an uruk.

Final verdict: 8/10

Hunter orc warriors

Image

"The fast-moving and fanatical Hunter Orcs serve as the right hand of Azog, a relentless band who will stop at nought to slay his quarry."

Pros

• high Strength and attacks
• can get acess bows and two handed weapons
• can get acess to warg

Cons

• expensive in orc standart
• poor defence
• same weakeness as orcs

Tactics

• These are your army backbone and by far the deadliest, if you take them I would suggest take as many as you can on foot and get horde.
• They are lightly armoured but they compensate this weakness with their many blades rule which increase their attacks to 2A per model, rending this army the capacity to fight shield/spear wall in equal terms as number of attacks as being a bit cheaper than a combo of those those, allowing you to keep moving the excess of orcs around and encircle your oponent.
• I dont suggest to take many on warg since they lose their special rule, although give em cav rules which more or so mitigates, but if this happens they become crazy expensive and they are still squishy. If you take em mounted, just get some and not the majority, mainly to counter enemy cavalry charges against your line or grab objectives/scout map duty, also thx to the warg they can charge elven cloak models as the warg can charge stuff they cant see :P
• If you support these with a backline of gundabad warriors with spear you get a mighty shieldwall with 3A at S4.

Final verdict: 9/10

Again I really like this tactica you have posted. Just a few questions though. What other armies are you doing this tactica on and do you think it would be a good idea to make these all one sticky thread of LOTR/Hobbit tactica considering the one we already have is quite outdated?
