MWG's Weekly Painting Pledge 11/4-11/11

Post by Nappen » Sat Nov 04, 2017 9:13 am

Staring at a squad of grey plastic soldiers?

Got a project that's been hanging round your neck?

Need to get that brush monkey off your back?

Tired of being "that guy/gal" at the table?

With support from each other we can get these models done!

Use this thread to pledge your weekly painting commitments. A public pledge of what you will paint or model over the week.

Pledges will begin Saturday of each week. By 11:59pm Saturday of the following week, you report back and explain if you completed the pledge or not. If possible post pics of your work. If you didn't complete it, then you have to take the shame.

Your painting pledge could be anything hobby related, and you can pledge a small amount of work if you want. You may want to paint that spare dreadnought arm you've had for ages, you may want to use this pledge for mini of the month purposes, or competition entries. Choice is yours.

Please post your pledge (and your completion post) in Big Bold Font.

Sorry for the delay but am still working off my iPad. BUT...am in a house now, so will pledge something when I get back from the course I am at. Will have to be able to do it in a day, but will do something :)

Everything is updated. A few people getting close to the next ribbon.

Pledge failed. It was close, but in the end, I didn't make it. Too lazy...

...I really suck at it. I use acrylics, and find that I cant seem to get the paint thinned properly. Can anyone give me a ballpark thinning ratio?
The trick is to cut your paints not just with water, but also with acrylic medium. If you use GW paints, Lahmian Medium is great because it thins in both pigment density and consistency at the same time. But otherwise, thinning with both a drop of acrylic medium (I use Liquitex matte medium) and water simultaneously usually does the trick.

WARNING: SCIENCE!

Acrylic paints are a pigment suspended in a water-soluble medium. However, that medium's behavior is strongly influenced by its pH level. Simply adding water to an acrylic paint changes its pH level, and if too much water is added, the pigment-suspending properties of the medium will be lost. This is what causes paints to "break" and separate and get all funky when you add too much water.

Additionally, there is the problem that (in English) the word "thin" is used interchangeably for two very different but occasionally related properties: consistency and opacity. As such, telling someone to "thin your paints" is actively unhelpful because it doesn't make clear which kind of "thin" you're referring to, or how that "thinness" can best be achieved.

Acrylic paints used for modeling purposes tend to have very high pigment densities, meaning a single coat will generally be very opaque. But they do this by having a relatively high-consistency ("thick") medium, meaning that unless you're careful in your application, you'll see brush-strokes and other signs of actual paint build-up. To get around this, you need to change the consistency of the paint, which you can do by adding water. Unfortunately, as mentioned above, water changes the chemical properties of the binding medium, so you may find that in order to get the paint to the desired consistency, you'll need to add medium as well as water to avoid having the paint "break." But neither water nor medium has any pigment in it, so by adding all of this other stuff to your paint, you are effectively reducing its pigment density - and thus its opacity. Which means that once your paint has the kind of consistency you want to get even coverage with no brush-strokes, it often lacks the opacity to achieve full coverage in a single coat. Hence Duncan's "two thin coats" mantra.

In general terms, what you're typically shooting for is paint that is the consistency of milk - thicker than water, but not by much. And you'll generally need to apply it in multiple coats to get the kind of color-coverage that you want. If you see your paint starting to separate, add a touch more medium to it.
