So I decided to play around with creating some bases today.

Water-ish base

I think these will work a lot better with a brown rock rather than the grey one.

I think you might be right about browner rocks on the water base, the water looks really good and I think a different colour stone would set it off
Yeah I wanted the cooler effect so I think it came up alright. Next time I'll add some rock mixture to the flow to make it look more like it's flowing. Luckily the rocks aren't glued onto the water base so I can play around with them a bit more.

Lava Bases

The lava bases start by using PVA glue to stick cork to the base after which you flood White PVA glue onto the base. As it dries it forms a skin use a brush to form small folds and your finger to push the glue around to form larger folds. When you're happy with it leave it overnight to dry. The glue will go clear and you will think you've stuffed up but it's fine.

Then it's just a matter of painting it. Start by coating the whole think in black undercoat and then Mephiston Red on the lava bits. Wash with null oil then reapply the Mephiston Red. The next layer is Evil sun followed by Dragon Slayer Bright. Finally a very light touch of yellow. I use a Game Colour Sun Yellow from Vallejo but the GW equivalent would be fine.

For the scale on top I used the Agrellan Earth on top and blacken with black paint before it fully dries. A tricky step as you don't want it to be too thick or it wont split. After it dries hit the top of the cork with a light coat of dawnstone and the lava base is done.

Water Bases

Since I'm still playing with these I'll just write how I created the main base. Start by coating the base in Agrellan Earth to form the cracked rock effect that you see on the bottom of a riverbed. I mixed in a little dawnstone to lighten it up with a brush. I found that it made this weird grey sludge and I thought it was going to fail horribly but it actually creates these awesome looking rocks that you would see in rapids. If you want more of these I'd play around a bit more with it. After that drys I poured a layer of water effects over the top and then added drops of blue ink (wash) to spread through the water effects. I found that if you gently lift one edge of the base then the ink will move through the water effect creating a natural wave like patttern. You can repeat this step to make the water deeper.

As for the rocks simply add cork to the base and paint until you get something you like. As I'm still playing with this I want go into detail.

I hope this helps if you want to have a play around with these bases yourselves. Thank you for your positive and constructive criticisms.

So I just thought I'd do a little update. I took the army to the tournament and came 3rd against lists that were a lot more powerful then mine so I was pretty happy with that. I also took best painted which I was more proud of. I'm about to start working on my doubles list for a tournament coming up in 6 weeks so I'll be posting some new work as soon as I finalise the list. Thanks to all those that commented and provided constructive criticism over the past few weeks
