Well, do realize a lot of those things weren't GW's conscious choice if that makes any sense. A lot of those terms were used in the Spanish Inquisition, which is the basis of the 40k Inquisition.

Actually it was probably intentional, imperium iconagraphy is heavily influenced by rome. Just look at the chapter banners. Just like roman legions, chapters are divided into 1000 men. I could go on but you get the point.

A lot of factions in the game can to be compared to civilizations of that time period.

The Imperium: Rome. Their iconography is very similar to Roman culture, and they attack anything they don't understand or don't like.

Orks: The Barbarians (Gaul, the Celtics, etc) They are split in to many tribes and often fight amongst themselves. They are many in number and care little for tactics and strategy, and live for the swirling chaos of battle. They are considered uncivilized by their classier counterparts.

Eldar: The Greeks. They once had one of the greatest empires in the history of the universe (Alexander the Great's Empire) however they are now few in number and are close to extinction. They are also very advanced technology wise.

Chaos: Spartacus and his rebels?

Tau: Maybe Carthage? I don't know much about either though.

Tyranids: I got nothing...

Dark Eldar: Same as 'Nids. Nothing.
Money can't buy happiness...but it can buy Warhammer, which is the same thing.

Skragskull's Silva Slayas - Orks, ~1500 pts.

Actually Eldar and Dark Eldar are simply based on your standard fantasy Elves and Dark elves..

Tau are quite Japanese based aswell.. Not entirely though, just loosely..

Umm Tyranids, Same I have no idea :?

Dark eldar are spartan, warlike andtough, eldar are athens, intelectual and haughty. I got nothing on nids or tau.

wait tau are chinese, far off, isolated but advancing and uniting quickly.

2nd edition factions can be compared to rome (the short ones might fit if we had lore for them), later factions dont fit the pretty analogy as well, nids crons and fish.

If you're looking for an Earth related influence I'd say insects. Devour without morals or malice for the survival of the hive.
Apologies if I talk positively about games that I enjoy.
