Superheavies - minimum points

Post by Nadia » Mon Sep 08, 2014 9:41 pm

While I know it possible field them in small games, you're not showing a lot of sportsmanship if you do.

When do you feel its OK to field the monstrosity?

Personally, I field them only during Apocalypse, and so long as my opponent's okay with it. Otherwise, I get this really guilty feeling fielding one, especially when my foe's got nothing left to kill them.

If you can fit it in your list, go ahead and bring it. I have no problems facing an OP list as long as I have fun with the game.

I have 2 and haven't used either in a serious game. My gaming group declare super heavies before each game as to avoid too much 'here's my army' battle shock.

My vote was 3K as I think that's a practical size army to include such a points sink. Realistically I wouldn't personally use one until about 10K.

The lowest I would tolerate one at is 2000 points. Normally I only bring them out for Apocalyptic games though, as most armies have problems chewing through 18 hull points on a 700 point model.

Knights are Super Heavies.

I really think they are okay at any point value, as long as we are playing Tactical objectives. I would though suggest not using "tabeling" as a win condition, that way the super heavy player will be severely hampered when trying to capture points.

Personally at 1000 pts you are really gonna have to list tailor to take down a super heavy, minimal troops and maximum firepower. A good idea since a superheavy will most likely be 90% of your opponent's army.

1500pts I feel is alright, a stompa will be half of the total army. Where as 2000pts is probably the sweet spot.

Having only faced knights and baneblade variants I would say 1000 points is a good amount of points, both just melt when they hit close combat. Also the fact that you gut your army to take them makes them much less overpowered. You usually can't handle flyers at all, have trouble scoring objectives and just generally make the rest of your army less effective.

In bigger point games, like 2000 points they become more effective as the rest of the army can actually support them and reduce their weaknesses.

I would say 3000pts is minimun were super heavies belong to. That is actually best for both players as not only it allows other player have enough units to as answer to super heavies but also allows player having super heavies have enough support for them.

That is the thing though... as I mentioned super heavise in lower point games balance themselves in that you don't have enough support.
But in all honesty do you really mean that 3000p is the limit? So no one can bring Imperial Knights under 3000p in your mind?

That's right. In lower points games there rarely is anything that can be done to super heavies. And using them does not even require unbound. Least for orks that easily get 1 HQ and 2 troops alongside with super heavy in 1000pts.

Agreed. I would really struggle against any superheavy with AS or GK without planning for it - whereas my mate who plays Eldar laughs at these units every time.

Same can be said for flyers... or regular tanks.
A Knight isn't impossible to kill at all. If you didn't bring anti tank that's your problem, not mine.
Super Heavies/Gargantuans are a part of the game, expect to meet them, plan accordingly
