LordMcAllister's Weekly Paint 2018

Post by LordMcAllister » Sun Jan 28, 2018 3:28 pm

So let's begin a new weekly paint for 2018! I started off with a single Skitarii Vanguard and a Primaris Intercessor. I tried a few new things on the primaris marine, like chipping fluid (on an infantry model) and using oil paint as a wash. Especially the oil paint was really nice. I'm going to put the primaris marine into my office. That way it will be much easier to explain what I'm actually doing in my hobbytime! :D

Oh, I like how that chipping turned out on that marine. I've seen it done on vehicles, but never on infantry-scale minis before. Did you apply the chipping fluid with a brush or an airbrush?

Thank you! I applied it with an airbrush.

So I finished another Primaris Marine. I have to say I really love the look of the models and they are very easy and fast to paint! This time I applied the battle damage without chipping fluid and exchanged the metal colour for pure black as battle damage. It tones done the whole miniature. What do you think about it?

Just for fun I plan on finishing a whole squad of five in this scheme and try to sell it on ebay. I'm curious if someone will be willing to pay more than the retail price of the minis.

I like the grey/metallic under the chips better than the black. It looks more natural.

You're right, the metallic chipping looks much more natural. The contrast is a bit too low, though, therefore it doesn't work too well on the tabletop. That's why I prefer the black chipping, as it is much more recognizable on a gaming table and gives a better threedimensional appearance. It DOES look a bit cartoony, though, and the metallic chipping has a more realistic look to it. A combination might be worth a try, adding small metallic accents to the black chipping.

The red helmet on the sergeant is beautifully shaded/highlighted. Very striking!

Thank you! I'm also especially fond of this combination of colours! It would also make for a very nice combination on a "leather" piece, I'd guess!

I'm currently working on my Imperial Knight's torso. I'm progressing nicely but didn't get around taking any pictures, yet.

I'm currently working on a Furioso Dreadnought. I already basecoated it in red and chipped the armour. Now I'm working on the highlights on the armour before tending towards the metal parts.

Perhaps the highlighting is a bit subtle... but it's a bit more visible in real life than in these pictures!

Lookin' good so far!

Also, get yourself some nitrile gloves - it'll prevent the impossible-to-clean paint from accumulating at the edges of your fingernails. ;)

Thanks! And yeah, my girlfriend suggested something similar. I will keep it in mind. ;)

I tried shading ,,white" (ulthuan grey) wings with a light blue (baharroth blue) and I'm really pleased with the outcome! I'm curious how it will look on the big piece on the torso. I will have to add battle damage to the wings, too... perhaps celestra grey, highlighted in pure white or pallid wych flesh?

I did a similar effect on the raised horse designs on my House Terryn kit on my most recent Knight (not exactly a close-up, but you can see it on the shoulderpad). Except I started with white, then did a nihilak oxide wash, then heavy drybrushed white back over it. The blue isn't as pronounced in my example. I got my suggestion from Warhammer TV's video on painting ghosts. Thought I'd give you an alternative suggestion.

As for wear/damage on white, I haven't really found a good way, myself. I tried a grey highlight as wear on the edges, and it was... okay. It looked fine with slightly darker edging on the grey (it conveniently dried that way), but I wasn't perfectly satisfied with it.
Armies:
40k: Knights Cynosure Iron Hands successor chapter, House Terryn Questor Imperialis, Thousand Sons/Tzeentch Daemons
30k: Thousand Sons
Age of Sigmar: Sylvaneth, Disciples of Tzeentch

Looking awesome!!

also, re: damage look on white - I tend to use the 'it's scratched to the base metal' approach. Which can either be rusted, or unrusted as you prefer.

That's also a nice way to do a blue shade on the white. It's much more subtle. I will keep it in mind for following projects, if my approach should show as being too dominant on the blue. I'm really eager to try it on a bigger scale on the torso!

Thanks! I considered painting the scratches in metal colours, but as I didn't do it on any of the other scratches, it seemed inconsistent to me. That's why I'll refrain from doing it that way.
