Koonitz's (it really is, kinda) Weekly Thread #2017

Post by Koonitz » Fri Mar 24, 2017 2:20 am

Yep, I finally got a bit of a groove back for painting. With the local hobby shop still out of commission (since August last year), but slated to reopen early April, my painting supplies are wearing thin, and all I have left for primer is a couple nearly empty cans of white! Good thing it's my go to base colour. Fair warning that this thread is NOT going to be weekly. It's going to be "Meh, whenever."

But, with the release of Inferno, Forge World's 7th installment of the Horus Heresy, a small little scarab beetle is worming its way towards my brain to feed me the knowledge of heresy. The Thousand Sons have been released.

I've already shown my first 3 tactical marines and, fortunately, I managed to get another 2 done.

In addition, I believe I've found my new favourite HQ choice. A Primus Medicae. Now, they're not able to be taken as your Warlord, but, with the Thousand Sons reliance on their Independent Characters, I thought squeezing as many of them into my army (instead of, say, fielding this model as a basic apothecary) would be a prudent move. Especially since I can upgrade him to a level 1 psyker!

I initially went with a fairly simple, straight forward paint job for expediency, it being an apothecary that was likely to get lost in a sea of a 20-man tactical squad, but then I got inspired with the apron (I'm not actually sure what it's called, when it drapes only over the leg like that. Anyone able to provide an answer?)

Hopefully I'll have more updates in the near future. For now, I'll likely be focused on filling the tactical squad to its full 20-man size.

he's looking cool :D I think that is a tabard but I'm not sure that's the 40k term for it (although tbh as I understand it, they were more cloth over entire armour originally but anywho....) I like it! It looks good too, without being overly ornamental.

They're looking very good! I'm glad to see some Pre-Heresy Thousand Sons! Is the writing on the back part of the apron or loin cloth of the apothecary free handed with art pencils? If it's the case, it looks really really good and gives the miniature a lot of character. It's a small detail, but it really improves the whole.

It is a transfer. Sadly, I'm not that good, otherwise my Thousand Sons would be far more impressive.

Yeah, it was pretty tricky learning transfers right. I still hate doing transfers on curved surfaces (such as power armour shoulderpads). Making sure to have a brush handy to draw water away from, or put more water under, the transfer helps. Other than that, I've had good luck having a layer of 'ard coat underneath when I apply, then a layer of lahmia medium over top after it's dried in place, to remove the gloss hides any sign it's a transfer.

Good stuff so far Koonitz! That Primus medicea is pretty kickass. Might I suggest painting more than a couple of dudes at a time? Assembly line painting tends to work quite well on marines, especially if you have lots of them, it does get a bit dull though.

But keep it up!

Appreciate the tip, but it's less about the grind, and more about a desire to paint in the first place. I'm fine working on one or two at a time, because I've had so little motivation to paint of late that it's all I can really work on and actually accomplish anything.

I have to paint 20 models for my Tac squad because I want to field a full squad of 20, and if I tried to do 5-10 models at a time, I'd never get them done, and I'd have no motivation, as I'd never FEEL like I accomplish anything when I did try to put brush to model.

I think part of it is that I have nothing really interesting to put on in the background (I like having somthing videoey in the background, like a TV show or a movie). Or there is, and I'd rather be watching it, instead of painting. If there was something I was excited to 'watch but not actually watch', I'd do more painting.

I do a lot of that. I "watch" TV with my wife and daughter, but really I paint and listen to what they are watching.

General-Kroll wrote:Have you tried listening to podcasts while you paint Koonitz? I find I have the same problem as you. I've been building a lot of my models in front of the TV lately, but when it comes time to get the painting done I find it hard to motivate myself to work on them for more than an hour or two at a time.

I'm a big music fan so I listen to Spotify or put some vinyl records on while I paint most of the time, but I've also been sticking a podcast on now and then. Random stuff like the History of Rome etc or Sport stuff. It gives me something to focus on while grinding away at the painting.
I have considered podcasts, but I don't know of any that would interest me at this time. I'd have to go hunting, and I spend my time doing other things than that. As for music, I find music just isn't enough, sadly. I feel the background noise needs to have some sort of substance to it, even if I'm not paying 100% attention to it. Fortunately, I decided to try out Netflix's Iron Fist series. It hasn't really gripped me, per say, but I still enjoy it. Makes it the perfect background fodder.

And now, a question. Split into a second post to separate it from the conversation.

I've almost completed another two and my first painting pledge. You may notice the red is a slightly different shade.
[+] Expand
The middle one is the original, flanked by the two new models.

Image
The reason for this is because I tried a different method of painting the red. I'm running short on the red I used at the start, and I've done everything I can to keep it alive. I'll need a new pot, hopefully soon if the FLGS opens in April. Until then, I noticed I had a pot of Khorne red, ordered as part of my giant "Get Alarielle painted" supply order (which will happen soon.... (tm) >_> ).

I tried basing one model with it to test it out, and ended up accidentally basing the other one, as well. After using a fairly liberal application of carroburg crimson to add shading, I then used the lighter red I started with as a heavy drybrush to bring the darker Khorne red back up to a lighter shade.

Overall, the colour does come out a tad darker, but I find it seems to be adding more depth to the model, overall. It's easiest to see on the top of the helmets, where the original seems more flat, whereas the new ones seem to have some shading around the gold trim.

Thoughts on whether I should just squeeze out as much of the lighter red as I can until I can resupply, or should I shift to the new style of the darker red base, first?

They look great as well! I'm not knowledgeable in painting, so I will let the specialists answer your question on the red.

However, I have a question myself. I was checking FW website and it seems that Magnus and the 30k Scarab Occult terminators aren't released yet since I can't find them. Is it true or I'm really searching poorly?
