Mars-Crusader's the weekly paint

Post by Mars-Crusader » Wed Jan 04, 2017 6:13 pm

For me 2016 was a busy year. Got a promotion, bought a home, ran a half marathon, been working on my house. However all of this left very little time for gaming. As a result the number of games I have played could be counted on 2 hands and most of those were X-Wing due to simplicity. With no major things projected in the near future to work on I will finally have time for gaming and have already joined an Age of Sigmar slow grow league. So it's time to wage war on the hundreds of unpainted models I own.

Models Painted 2017- 94 Models
12 BB Orcs
12 BB Humans
12 BB Skaven
40 Space Marines
5 Cataphractii Terminators
1 Legion Praetor
2 Skitarii Rangers
3 Ironstrider Ballistari
3 Kataphron Destroyers
3 Kataphron Breachers
1 Belisarius Cawl

Awesome! I didn't know you had Thousand Sons! And it's a pretty impressively large army! I can't wait to see more of them!

Looking forward to the progress. I am excited for blood bowl too. Still waiting for mine to arrive.

Are those lizardmen for an army or a bloodbowl team?

@Kovlovsky Thousand Sons were the first squad I bought when I started playing this game back in whenever 3rd edition came out. I have always had a soft spot for them. The problem with my collection is I started putting so many things in boxes and with it out of sight and out of mind I kept buying things and now I have an absolutely insane amount of models to work on.

@TheHoundmaster They're shaping up to where they may be done sooner then expected.

@Nappen I don't have any lizardmen. I think you are referring to my Hordes Minions. Caliban the Gravewalker, Gatorman Posse, Totem Hunter, and an Iron Back Spitter.

Soooo many miniatures! :o Impressive!

I see some Electropriets in your AdMech Army. Have you actually fielded them yet? If so, how do they fare? I think their rules are pretty nice, but only a 5++ invul safe seems quite risky for a footslogging unit (as AdMech doesn't have any transports and I don't want to use allies). What is your experience so far?
Painted in 2018:
AdMech: 2 Vanguard
Marines: 1 Rhino, 6 Primaris Intercessor, 1 Captain in gravis armour, 1 Scribbus Wretch
Shadespire: 4 Sepulchral Guard

I'm curious, why do you think they will be done sooner than expected? How are they to build? It looks as if they may be the more...restrictive...plastic minis that GW is doing these days. Don't get me wrong, much better sculpts and details, way more movement being shown, etc, but they just don't seem to have the same customization as they used to. Cynical me says its because GW doesn't want people to have a "bits box" or buy individual parts online as it cuts into their profit. This way if you want a different type of unit you gotta go buy the whole box.

How are they to paint? Forgive my lack of knowledge on wood effects, but I would think a lot of it would just be dry brushing. Am I far off here?

Well, the new Thousand Sons models are actually quite amazing at giving quite a lot of options in the boxes. So, I don't think it's a general policy to reduce the customisation. My feeling is that AoS stuff isn't very customisable rules wise, so they didn't put much effort into giving a lot of bits of options and instead focused on making dynamic poses. The TS boxes I have impressed me a lot. All torsos, heads and weapons are unique. I checked it carefully and each bolter has different prosperine runes on the sides just to give you an example. The Exalted Sorcerers kit is especially impressive with so many alternative bits. It's the best kit I've ever seen. So this isn't a policy in my own opinion.

Thats excellent to hear! I was getting worried after seeing the special characters and Fantasy miniatures being those 2-3 piece ones that are stuck in single poses but look great. Glad to hear that the TS are getting some love, sad that my Dark Angels probably won't be seeing anything new for a long time due to Dark Vengeance. Ah well, it'll come around sooner or later!

I think they're also trying to strike a new balance on ease of putting together - but that is more a general impression from the Silver Tower and other games boxes they have out.

Anyway, love the armies!! I have to say I'm really not into the Elecro-Priests - I love all the other Admech stuff. But after reading the Mars series, and learning how one is made.... they kinda freak me out now tbh lol. And I was never hugely thrilled with the sculpt itself, but after that book, I don't think I would use one if I had to haha

Been gone a while but I haven't been completely idle. First off an informal poll which Imperial Fist do you like more. The left or right.

Next up one of my Blood Bowl Teams. The skavenblight scramblers.

It totals 2 Branchwraiths, Dryacha, Treelord, 2x Ancients, Spirit of Durthu, 60x Dryads, 12x Kurnoth Hunters, 10x Tree Revenants, 10 Spite Revenants.

Oooooh!!!

Ok Imperial Fists - Love em!

I think the Left One looks a bit better than Righty? but that could be the lighting, or that the right one is slightly out of focus. Anyway I do tend towards liking brighter yellows myself.

Also, Blood Bowl Skaven wwwwweeeee! looking awesome!

Love those Sylvanth too really like that army!

I like the worn out yellow that you did on your Imperial Fists. Personally, I the two miniatures are pretty much the same, but the right one is slightly in the shadow, so we don't see it very well if there was a difference in tone. I tend to prefer tarnished yellows to bright one because I feel it's more likely to like this when you are fighting constantly on the field in the mud and dust. They look less like if the armor is brand new from the factory and it's a bit less easy to spot you (but it's still pretty easy to spot them to be honest).

To paint my Imperial Fists I started with Army Painters Skeleton Bone Primer. Followed that up by edging the armor with Agrax Earthshade (for heavy contrast) or Reikland Fleshshade (for a softer gradient between the yellow and brown). Then I edged high points of the armor with Skull White. Lastly 2-4 coats of Lamenters Yellow Glaze. Let each coat dry before the next and keep them from pooling.

As for what I have been working on the past 2 weeks, Blood Bowl Orcs and Humans!
