Well I wasn't doing it intentionally, and I'd have to say it's super heavy-handed. After I fished the dude out of the can, I needed to remove quite a bit of the stain, as it was just way too thickly applied, even after giving him a good shake. I think the best dip method I've ever seen was the Dr. Faust video, where he used a drill to spin the mini at high-speed to shake off all of the excess. Super quick, but prone to making a godawful mess if you're not careful. I much prefer applying the stain with a brush, as it gives me much better control over where and how thickly the shading is applied.

More progress on my Infinity minis:

The green skin-suit for both of them is done. The blending is hard to see given the lighting - it's much easier to see on the Fiday. And oh, man, all the little wires/tubes on his stealth suit were a colossal pain! SO TINY! But I'm really happy with the final result. The tan of his armor is just the base coat so far. That will get highlighted up and then washed/filtered to blend everything together. Then it's on to the details.

Thanks!

In terms of the colors, I'm actually following the studio paint scheme for these. I gave it a fair amount of thought before I embarked on painting any of my Infinity stuff, but I just love the tan-and-green of the studio minis so much, I went with that. It may not be original, but I just really like the way they look, both up-close and on the table.

My Hassassin Fiday is almost done! I just need to do a couple of little detail highlights and then figure out how I'm going to do the blade of his knife.

These photos are a little reflective because both the tan body-armor and the gem have a top-coat of a wash, which has a little Future Floor Wax in it to cut surface tension. Unfortunately it dries a little shiny, so until I finish this guy and hit him with a little Dullcoat, it's a little hard to see the blending and highlighting on parts of him.

I also made some progress on the Barid hacker as well, but ended up having to backtrack a little bit because at one point I started basing with the wrong color paint! Whoops!

I had fun with these guys. And man, that pale-green-to-yellow fade on the Hassassin Barid Hacker's body-armor was hard to get right.

Also, I've tried a new light set-up with these photos. I feel like it washes the colors out a little too much. I definitely need to tinker with it a little more.

It's been a while since I've posted, but I haven't been (too) idle. Being as I recently got into historical gaming (gods help me), I've been painting up a storm. I just put the first coat of matte sealer on my second squad of American GIs, as well as a 2-man Bazooka team. I'll post pics of them shortly (it's literally drying as I type this).

But half of the fun of WW2 games are all the crazy vehicles. So I decided to try my hand at Warlord Games' 28mm SdKfz 222. Given that I'm theming my stuff for North Africa, I decided to paint it up in Deutsches Afrika Korps colors. I also decided that it needed to look worn, weathered, and generally beat-up. Most of the 40K vehicles I've painted have been Necrons, which I did in a very clean style with no real weathering. I'd done an IG Chimera before, and while I used a wash to make it look dirty and bring out the details, I'd never tried more realistic weathering on a vehicle model before.

The white Balkenkreuz markings were done with a template I made from Scotch Tape. I printed out the design, laid the transparent tape over it, then cut out the design with my trusty #11 X-Acto. It wasn't perfect, but it let me get the Balkenkreuz roughed in, and I was then able to touch up by hand the bits that needed it.

I'm not sure, but I think I might need to take photos with less light, or maybe more diffuse light. A lot of the rust effects don't really show up in the pictures.

I'm really happy with the way it turned out, though. I have a Panzer II ausf B that's done in the same color scheme too. The bulk of the weathering is done on it, but it needs the tracks and road wheels done. I should be able to knock that out pretty quickly if I can get a little time to work on it.

I'm not dead!

I did a little bit of terrain work:
Image

A desert oasis. This was my first try using Envirotex Lite water effects, and it was surprisingly easy. It turned out a little darker than I wanted - I had to add in a bunch more brown ink after my five-year-old son got a little carried away with the green. I probably should have done a thinner pour to account for that. Still, I'm pretty happy with the way it turned out.

It was also the first time I'd used Agrellan Earth, and I learned some things about that too. It actually pulled up the Acrylic Texture Medium over which it (and a layer of primer and a base-coat of paint) were applied. Not exactly what I wanted, but the resulting crackle texture gave flakes that were very thick and nicely curves, so I'm gonna call it a happy accident.
