One thing I want to suggest: You could try using parts of birch seed for leafs. If you crumble those ,,seed pods" growing on birch, you will get the actual seeds and some stuff which looks like little leafs.

I think those do look great as leafs, as they fit in size, look and colour. I've seen it done and it always looked stunningly convincing!
