Is a RoW necessary?

Post by Stelovitch » Fri Jan 27, 2017 2:40 pm

Hey all. I'm looking into starting HH with an Imperial Fists army. I was going to start off with a Praetor and 2 max squads of tactical marines with just bolters, and some fortifications for fluff. But I'm looking through a lot of the RoWs and see there's not really that much that would benefit that playstyle, as many of them say you can't use fortifications. Plus many of them seem to be focused towards a very niche playstyle, like mass dreads, mass termies or drop pods. I'm not sure that it would be the best choice for me.

Any help would be appreciated!

I find that RoW's tend to give very slight bonuses for how much they restrict, they aren't anywhere near as strict as formations are, but also don't offer the same bonuses.

If you can't find a RoW that doesn't fit your playstyle then don't bother, the bonuses are often too small anyways, the way I see them is that if your army is already going to fit a RoW, take it, or make slight adjustments, but if you don't take one you get full freedom in designing your army and aren't missing out on much, sometimes it can be better, because you aren't shafted into one particular build. As the RoWs often take you down a very one-minded army build, but gives rules to support it, in a normal CAD, you can cover elites, and fast attack, not being restricted to either and take the fortification which is both fluffy for Imperial Fists, and is another point in taking a CAD

Always armoured assault, always. But I might be somewhat biased.

I'm trying not to use any tanks (I know it's a terrible Idea.)

My idea is to let the heavy supports with tank hunters take apart the big stuff while my bolter infantry out shoots their specialist squads with shear amount of BS 5 bolter fire.

So a good place for my heavy supports to hide in seems fairly necessary :P
