GB69 - Bridge to Terra Firma - *COMPLETE*

Post by Guildenstern » Sat Nov 14, 2015 11:42 pm

well it sorta fits the theme. I think. Of course being a swamp/marsh theme - who knows if that terra is really firma?! :P

Anyway here's my first WIP shots:

Not going as fast as I'd hoped, but anyways here's some updates finally :)

Image

I cut out the dowel bits that'll be the logs keeping the bridge upright. I also cut out a piece of board to use as the base and did a little removing of material from the center to make the water. It's going to be pretty shallow so I didn't remove much, plus I put some painter's tape around the edges for two reasons: one, to try to keep the edges clear of paint for the pond, and two, to dam in the water effects, if I end up using them.

Image

Here, I painted the base of the pond/water in german camo black/brown. Before it was really dry I spurted some drops of moss green onto the same areas and brushed it in, mixing it a bit. After that, I used the jungle moss colour to make lighter green areas and a final lighter green (can't think of third triad name) to make highlights. When I was doing highlights I pretty much stippled the paint in, in various sections, to give it a more dappled appearance.

Once it was dry I went over it again a bit with some more of the lightest to make a few areas stand out.

And I matte varnished it, just in case.

I'm trying to decide between water effects and just a gloss varnish - it's quite shallow so the water effects may not be the best choice. Not sure.

I painted the bridge boards with Rhinox, did a drybrush of vallejo sandy khaki, then a green wash. After that dried a bit, I went back over with dryad bark first, then a golden brown, pretty much heavy drybrushing. Then I did a bit of agrax to blend it a bit more.

The posts are dryad bark with the golden brown on top - they're meant to be logs. I'm going to try and do some bark like details. We'll see how that goes.

Then it's pretty much just getting it together and adding the foliage which to me is pretty daunting. I want it to look really natural, but I have a hard time with that. I always seem to end up adding it in a more forced manner, less natural.

Oh and I've a few lily pads, mushrooms and maybe a frog or two I'm going to throw in it.

waiting on my bushes to dry...

^^ current WIP view - gotta couple lichen bushes on, some 'shrooms (wooden buttons) and the bridge posts in, and texture paint drying.

Mushrooms and lilies look good. The lichen looks a bit lonesome though...makes the whole mud covered ground look out of place. My suggestion is to add some static grass in patches around the whole thing, especially close to the lichen and/or maybe near the water's edge where plant life would grow. Will help tie it together even more nicely!

It's a really beautiful piece of terrain. The mushrooms and water lilies look great and were really good ideas. I also love the realism of the water you've made.

I LOVE it with all the added grasses and trees! Really fits the dense, crowded atmosphere of a swamp. And like Kov said, highly realistic. Well done!

thanks guys :) glad it came out ok!

just for S's and G's - here's a couple of reference pics I used (they're large so I just threw a link in):

Swamp1
Swamp2

It's from a park here in GA, and yes, those are gators in the water ;) The green algae is what gave me the idea for the water.
