Tau Manta Drop and workarounds

Post by coldsteel » Sat Aug 05, 2017 1:43 pm

Ran into this last night. Guy had a squad of Crisis Suits in reserve for Manta Drop/Deep Strike. He forward-deployed a squad of Stealth Suits 12" from my lines. (He also ran up 4 Ghostkeels with them, but that's another whiny rant...) First turn, he moves up 10" from me and drops the Homing Beacon they carry. End of his movement phase, he drops in the Crisis Suits within 6" of the beacon, incidentally ending up 4-5 inches from my lines. The rules for the Homing Beacon say 'Instead of a Manta Drop...' and only the Manta Drop says 'More than 9" away.' So, sucked being me or...?

Sucked being you.

Yea the Homing Beacon replaces the "Manta strike" with a new set of rules.

Yep. By default most things in the game will have to arrive at least 9" away from your models, but there are many combinations and scenarios in the game where units can get much, much closer. In this edition it's very important to bubble-wrap your more valuable units with cheap throw-away units like kroot or even fire warriors during deployment, that way if your opponent is running close-deployment shenanigans you'll only lose some cheap units instead of your important stuff!
