Mastadon Heavy Assault Vehicle (for fun)

Post by TobyGaunt89 » Sun Aug 06, 2017 7:08 am

Looking at the new Chaos content released, while also looking back and forth between Forge World content, I came across the Mastadon Heavy Assault vehicle. I couldn't help but thinking "What if this was added to 8th Edition 40K instead of 30K?" and "How would that look?". So, here's some what I'd think the Mastadon would be if it had a 40K version entry:

Unit Type: Lord of War

Power/Points: X

Unit Composition: 1 Mastadon Heavy Assault Cruiser.

Weapons: 2x Heavy Flamers, 2x Lascannons, 1x Twin Thermal Cannon, 1x Twin Kheres Pattern Assault Cannon.

Wargear Options: May take 1x, 2x or 3x Hunter-Killer Missiles. May take 1x-2x Combi-Weapons. May take Sonic Pods*. May take Daemon Engine**.

* Sonic Pods = "Instead of firing its weapons, the Mastadon Heavy Assault Cruiser may use its Sonic Pods. Enemy units within 12" of the Mastadon Heavy Assault Cruiser gets -1 To Hit for Shooting and Melee until the end of the Battle Round".

** Daemon Engine = "At the start of any player turn, roll a D6. on the roll of a 2+ the Mastadon Heavy Assault Cruiser gains a 5+ Invulnerable Save until the end of that turn. However on a roll of a 1 the Mastadon Heavy Assault Cruiser suffers D3 mortal wounds instead".

Abilities: Daemonic Machine Spirit: Ignore the -1 hit modifier for moving and shooting Heavy weapons for this model.
Explodes: If this model is reduced to 0 wounds, roll a D6 before removing this model from the battlefield and beforeany embarked models disembark; on a 6 it explodes, and each unit within 6" suffers D6 mortal wounds.
Dread Behemoth: This model can Fall Back in the Movement Phase and still shoot and/or charge during this turn. It can also fire its weapons if enemy units are within 1" of it (but only its Heavy Flamers or Combi-Weapons can target units within 1" of it). In addition this model only gains a bonus to its save in cover if at least half the model is obscured from the firer.

Stats:

M:(*)
WS:(5+)
BS: (*)
S: (8)
T: (8)
W: (24)
A: (*)
Ld: (10)
Sv: (3+)

Damage Table:

24-13 Wounds: M:(8). BS:(3+). A:(8).
12-7 Wounds: M:(6). BS:(4+). A:(6).
1-6 Wounds: M:(4). BS:(5+). A:(D6).

Transport: This model can transport 20 <Legion> Infantry models (each Terminator and Jump Pack model takes up the space of two other models, and each Cult of Destruction model takes up the space of three other models).

Faction Keywords: Chaos, <Mark of Chaos>, Heretic Astartes, <Legion>.

Keywords: Vehicle, Transport, Mastadon Heavy Assault Cruiser.

The Mastodon is currently available to 40k Loyalist AND Heretic armies through the Imperial Armour indices for each faction respectively.

Loyalist.

Heretic.

If you click on each link, you can see the Mastodon listed in the table of contents for each book, at the end of the "Heavy Armour" and "Hellforged" lists respectively.

Because of these new indices, very, very few Forge World Heresy models previously unavailable to Chaos are still unavailable. Right now, I can think of three.

- Vindicator Laser Destroyer (which was granted to Chaos through the FAQ, though you will need to buy the loyalist Imperial Armour index for the datasheet).
- Sicaran Punisher (Released after the indices, but a datasheet was included in the loyalist book. No such luck for Chaos).
-Sicaran Arcus (Newly released as of this week, PDF rules for 40k only allow loyalists at this time).

Previously unavailable, but now available, thanks to the indices:

- Contemptor Dreadnought (FAQed to allow dual ranged weapon arms)
- Land Raider Proteus
- Land Raider Achilles
- Relic Predator variant turrets (with really cool Hellforged Predator rules!)
- Whirlwind Scorpius
- Sicaran
- Sicaran Venator
- Spartan Assault Tank
- Deredeo Dreadnought
- Rapier batteries
- Leviathan Dreadnought
- Cerberus Heavy Destroyer
- Typhon Heavy Siege tank.
- Fellblade Super-heavy tank
- Falchion Super-heavy tank destroyer
- Mastodon
- Storm Eagle Assault Gunship
- Fire Raptor Assault Gunship
- Sokar Pattern Stormbird Gunship
- Xiphon Interceptor
- ALL Forge World Knights, including the new super-heavy Acastus Knight Porphyron.
- Warlord Titan (in addition to the Warhound and Reaver)

It's a good day to be Heretical.

Most of those were already available. IA13 had at least:

- Contemptor Dreadnought
- Land Raider Proteus
- Land Raider Achilles
- Relic Predator variant turrets
- Sicaran
- Spartan Assault Tank
- Rapier batteries
- Typhon Heavy Siege tank.
- Fellblade Super-heavy tank
- Storm Eagle Assault Gunship
- Fire Raptor Assault Gunship
Time will tell... Sooner or later... Time will tell.

Eh, close enough. If you never got IA13, you never had access to them anyway, so it sorta, partially counts. At least the index is much cheaper.

Edit: Not to belittle the quality of Forge World's hard cover book releases. I own two, plus one of the black cover Horus Heresy series books, and they are 100% worth their cost in lore and fluff alone, let alone rules.
