Is it acceptable to switch codexes w/ marine armies?

Post by SobieFett » Tue Jun 12, 2012 9:41 am

Question is: Are you considered a prick or cheap or rude (however you wish to put it) if you switch the codex rules you play under?

For example: to play codex marines and blood angels with the same army?

the best part about marines is making your own chapter
just one thing before you play a game fallow 1 codex and do not mix the codexs during the game ex do not take He'stan in a blood angels army.
How ironic it is that as fast as we spread progress and hope throughout the galaxy, the Tyranids spread death and despair. Only united can we hope to stand against them. Aun'shi of the Tau Empire

^This right here. Making your own chapter is far more satisfying than playing straight from the books. As long as the wargear on the modesl are the same as the various Codices, then by all means, yes.

When my brother and I first started 40K, we struggled to have enough models. I don't know how many times those Assault on Black Reach Orks got used as Guardsmen. But our collection expanded and we are now able to field substantially more with the armies we own, and we don't play with any new armies until we have a good sized, fully painted army.

Figure substitution is not a capital sin, and so long as your opponent is okay with it, and the base sizes are the same, then it shouldn't matter.

Taken from a new wargamer's prospective, I couldn't see why it would hurt.

I just picked up a space marine army, bout 1000 pts worth. I started painting them blue because hey, standard space marine colors.

...And then I hear Dark Angels Codex is coming out. They're green. My entire army is primed blue and about a third are in the midst of detailing. So, I could say, "I can't play as DA, I have blue marines." Or I could say, "I can play as DA as long as my models fit the the codex bill."

So, I mean, yeah walking into a game with a codex already in mind, seeing your opponents army and doing a quick switch is downright cheating in my opinion but using another codex that you picked out WELL before hand and mixing them up every now and then? If they're WYSIWYG, I'm cool.

EDIT:
In regards to my last comment about WYSIWYG, I have no problem with proxies. Of course, bringing a Tau army and saying they're CSM is REALLY pushing it. :P
Army - Points - W/L/D

Space Marines- 1500 pts - 0/1/1
Tau - Coming soon!

There are two LGS in my area and at least one player at each store does this. One guy has Blood Angels, Wolves and G. Knights all painted similar with Red/Metal themes and shares models between whatever Codex he decides to play. Though in his defense, he does have models exclusive to each army too.

The other guy at the other store has a burgundy, gold them and runs them as codex marines, Blood Angels, Wolves and Chaos.

People seem to let that go, even during Feast of Blades Tournament season, but I just don't play against either one. Fluff wise, it seems like a d*** move to me.

Well I started out with my own scheme (basically dark angels but different) and played the vannila dex for a while. Now I'm onto Blood Angels, and I'll probably use them for the new Dark angels when they come out as well.

Thats the thing with marine armies, you buy a few basic troops and you can use any codex you want with them. as long as you buy the special vehicles / upgrade spews for them
I don't usually post often, but when I do. It's pretty fricken epic.

Yep it's fine as long as your not mixing rules. My main force is ultramarines and I use the models from that army when I want to play blood angels, wolves or whatever. I mainly just do it with vehicles as most of each army's main infantry aren't too expensive. But the vehicles are just so much that I swap them between my marine armies all the time.
Ultramarines 9260 Dark Eldar 1000
Blood Angels 2000 Csm 950
Grey Knights 2000 Tyranids 900
Necrons 1850 Tau 900
Dark Angels 1100 Guard 505
