Beta Primaris Marines Transport Rules

Post by Ronin » Wed Apr 25, 2018 11:17 pm

I wrote some beta rules to give primaris marines options for transports to use exclusively within our group. However, I'll send this over to GW too in case they're interested in making changes in Chapter Approved or a future FAQ. Primaris marines can now ride any transport, but cost at least 2 model slots for the normal ones, 3 for gravis (only in land raiders and stormraven), and 4 if they're an inceptor (only in stormraven). I also brought the ability for dreadnoughts to ride in drop pods. Take a look and feel free to leave any thoughts.

Add the Sokar Pattern Stormbird, Thunderhawk and Relic Mastodon Super Heavy transport as they are bigger than the Stormraven.

I don't have any Forge World books or transports so that's why I've excluded them.

I don't feel that Rhinos or Razorbacks should be able to transport Primaris marines, as they are basically terminator sized, and the transports are way dinky in comparison to primaris marines. I do agree that anything that can carry a terminator should be able to carry primaris marines.

Be careful with blanket statements like "any". Any SM transport, or any Imperium transport? I'd love to see a squad of hell blasters pop out of the back of a Stormlord, but unfortunately that's not possible.

Eh. I've done games where we counted Primaris marines (even in gravis) as terminator sized and as such, can't use rhinos or razorbacks...but are able to use any sm transport that allows the transportation of terminators.

What you should look at including is to allow a Spartan landraider to cart around Bobby G.

Shouldn't Drop pods be able to carry terminators? I mean they had no rule in 7:th ed that they couldn't as Rhinos and Razorbacks had.

I agree with Arnathos on this. I think the Rhino, Razorback and Drop Pod should be limited to the regular sized marines, as this gives them the "cheap and tactical mobility" that they function around. It seems as though the Primaris Marines instead (in the lore) focus more on being the "frontline warriors" of the Space Marines legions. Which makes the Land Raiders and the Stormraven Gunship a nice add-on to the rules for the Primaris Marines; as these models too begin the game on the board and not in 'Deep Strike' Reserves. + Can transport larger infantry models.

Drop Pod for Dreadnaught should be unique from the regular Drop Pod (sterdier in both fluff and stats) and should reflect that in the points department. Adding ´Deep Strike´ to the Dreadnaughts would be a big boost for them after all.

My issue with primaris marines only having access to the bigger transports is we're kind of back to square one with the repulsor which is basically already a land raider. The primaris marines don't really need big centerpiece transport models, but smaller cheaper ones.

The twofold problem is that fluffwise, primaris already are able to ride into battle with their little bros in rhinos and the like. Another is that while primaris are taller, they are not all that much bulkier. I would suggest 2 primaris take the space of 3 regulars. But of course at either exchange rate most primaris cannot fit a whole 5 man squad into a rhino.

Which really begs the question, how do primaris wage war? They dont have a propper battletank or apc, though the repulsor is a mess of both that puts too many eggs in one basket. They also lack artillery and longer ranged guns in general or close.combat specialists. The reivers are able to kill horders, but cannot deal with hard targets at all.
In short without regular marines filling in all the missing pieces, primaris marines dont seem to be able to do what marines have been doing for the past 10,000 years. They dont even fit into droppods...

There's definitely disconnect between the fluff and the gameplay of 40k and the reasons why we have these differences is supposed to be because of game balance and marketability. I'm pretty sure they said no to Primaris marines using other transports because they wanted people to still buy normal marines. Otherwise, if normal humans should be able to arrive via drop pods (except with a ton of motion sickness as one novel portrayed) why can't primaris marines?

On the other hand, Wrath and Glory, the 40k RPG, is coming out soon so primaris marines will be able to ride anything they can fit in.
