Guard Army Questions

Several issues I'm having regarding constructing my all infantry army, with regards to squad choices.

1. Is there any benefit to putting my HWTs inside regular squads, or do I want to keep them separate?
2. Is there any benefit to using Mortars over Heavy Bolters? I have never actually played on a board where I "Can't see my enemy" so the mortars strength is somewhat pointless.
3. Is there any way to stick a bolter on my SGTs that doesn't look horrible? I can't find non-SM bolters. Having a almost dedicated melee unit in a squad of dedicated ranged units seems pointless. I want him to contribute.
4. Are the GLs completely worthless? I've had limited success with them as anti-MEQ poppers, which given the cost is good.
5. Priests/psychers - Go Sanctioned, or Weirdvane?

1) I prefer it this way since your opponent has to chew through your meatshield guardsmen before getting to the heavy weapons. Otherwise if I saw hwt, I would focus fire on them because they're easy targets.

2) if you're not using line of sight blocking terrain in 40k, it's really biased towards gun lines which is why a lot of major tournaments incorporate at least 2 pieces in the middle. Mortars were actually king for a while until a lot of armies got - 1 to hit.

3) if you have leftover points, I'd go for them. It's logical to give sergeants that which is why I wish there was the option to take Las guns too.

4) I don't use them. I prefer to plasma spam and order them to reroll 1. Nets more damage over the game.

5) I don't really have much experience running psykers since the narrative of my army is they avoid them.

I figured the advantage in HWTs solo was they fall under the Heavy support side, and so I can fill out my detachment easily with HWTs at 33pts. I guess I can do both. It's funny how it's literally the same unit, occupying two different unit types.

To add onto what ronin said:

1- They are indeed safer in infantry squads, but they are still heavy weapons, and so they'll recieve a -1 to hit when moving to take an objective or get closer to the enemy. That'll add onto the -1 to hit if you're facing the likes of Eldar or RavenGuard too.

2- personal choice really.

3- I've used my Sisters of silence bolters, which are smaller, thinner and if you cut of a lasgun from the stock onwards it fits fine.

4- Plasma's almost always better, but GL at least didn't get more expensive for BS3+. I use mine on vets with shotguns for the krak round when assaulting.

5- Weidervane suck. Go with sanctioned.

Literally, where in God's golden throne, are people getting all this Plasma from? Even Scions only get 2x spru. Guard command squads get 1. Guard squads get ZERO. So where are people getting these plasma bits? Honestly asking. I'm sick of calling my flamers plasma...

Either from long standing collections, trading with friends, or bits sellers (usually on e-bay). Forge World also offers resin weapon sets (ie: Like this one).

I just proxy because I don't magentize, I don't play tournaments, and changing bits every edition gets annoying. As long as my opponent knows where the special weapon in the unit is and I paid points for it, it's fine.

To be honest, while plasmaguns are better, on BS4+ Guardsmen they usually only kill 1 model per turn anyway. So you aren't really losing that much by using flamers in infantry squads instead.

Personally I run 6 infantry squads now. 3 in the front row, with bolt pistols and flamers, and 3 behind them with plasmaguns and bolters.

The rest of my plasma is either on my tanks, or in my Stormtroopers (who I also use a decent number of Volleyguns with).

The damage output and AP is what I go for when picking plasma, though. Rapid fire plasma has the potential to take off 4 wounds which is a third of the wounds a Leman Russ has. Plus it has range so it'll net more damage over the course of the game whereas a flamer only gets one or two shots before they're locked in melee.

So, I love the idea of of going all Volley guns in my Scion squads, simply because I get 4x guys, 4 shots each, so 16 shots. It's still 4/-2/1, but the plasma squad, for 24 more points, gets me 4 guys, 2 shots each, of 7-8/-2/1-2. 8 shots. My Volley guns will wipe out squads, and my plasma squads will wipe out vehicles. but don't overlook those volley guns.

but as the above said, I don't see the point of wasting the points on squads that likely will miss anyway, instead of going with high volume weapons like launchers and lasguns. The basic infantry squads aren't setup to be specialists.

I run two company commanders near them for reroll 1's for that. Also if you play cadia, they reroll hits with that order.

Right, my scions roll under Militarium Tempestus, not Cadian. I believe in the fluff. I know I'm ham-stringing myself, but I love it.

I can't use SMs because....I don't have that much money, and I already bought scions. But if wishes were money, I'd have a detachment of Custodes.
