All right guys, I'm going to start a side project for my tau, and with the new marine dex, I wanna give em a try. here's the list

Captain 180

Vulkan, only 10 points more than your captain. His rules are far too good to pass up.

Also Sgt's take combi weapons, always.

I think for what you want perhaps white scars or raven guard better option? Since you seem to want more close combat.

Salamanders excel at short range FIREfights :) The only unit i consider taking, is 1 single assault squad for close combat, termis if you looking at 2k+

Salamanders, alpha strike drop pods, with dreads, 5 man melta squads, 10 man Anti infantry, flamers etc.

Supported by thunderfires, couple storm talons and a fully decked out sternguard unit.

Comms relay to make sure everything lands by turn 2.

Good, because i do too :)

I just got my limited eition codex in the post :)

But play to their strengths, forget the assault squads, and the vanguard squad, o with sternguard, more tacticals, and drop pods. Is so much more effective.

A ten man tactical squad, with heavy bolter, flamer and combi flamer coming from a drop pod with fire 14 bolter shots (at full BS), 2 flamer template and 3 heavy bolter shots. If they are then charged, they will fire 16 bolter shots, 3 heavy bolter shots and a template. (assuming they dont take casualties before they are charged)

Sternguard can land and fire 2 Heavy flamers templates, and a load of specialist ammo / combi gravs, and have a few combi flamers, if they are charged your going to do 2x d3 heavy flamer hits, and lets say 3x d3 flamer hits, rerolling to wound. + 10 bolter shots.

5 man tactical with melta and combi melta in drop pod, lands, fires 2 melta shots at the nearest vehicle, (probably within melta range) and reroll to hits because of vulkan.

now all of this can come down in turn 1, right next to the enemy.

and then turn 2, you can have more squads, or dreads - or swap and dread come down first and fire multimeltas, twinlinked again, popping tanks / transports.

Drop locator beacons on them and deepstrike some landspeeders/terminators, without scattering.

Meanwhile those assault marines are still jumping accross the board and getting shot..

Oh and your thunderfires are safely behind the aegis line with a comms relay, firing off 8 small blast str 6 shots.

Take some scouts too if you want, either shotguns in a LS storm, or snipers behind cover.

I do like to take one assault squad, but mainly to deal with any bikes etc, that try to get at my backline

I think you mean 4 str 6 small blasts. And yes to what this guy is saying pretty much. Thunderfire with aegis and comms relay. Then lots of pods with guys kited out with flamers/meltas

No, Black Dragons and Storm Giants were POSSIBLY successors, nothing confirmed.

If you're going Salamanders... well, you definitely got all the flamers down.. but I think the HQ is a bit expensive for what it does. I'd find a way to put him in with the Vanguard Vet squad... and drop a squad of Assault Marines in favor for more troops.

Im sure you mean sternguard :) Vanguard arent good enough, especially when you can put him with Termis, or even centurions, both of which are better choices than vanguard (who take up a valuable elite slot).

But as for him being to expensive:
Standard captain with Strom shield, relic weapon, artificer armour, combi flamer and digital weapons = 170 points.

Vulkan gets a heavy flamer and gives twin inked meltas, for 20pts more? yes please.
