GB LII: Abandoned Lock Display Board

Post by darkHokie » Fri Dec 27, 2013 10:41 pm

So, I've got a bit of a fun challenge ahead of me... a 750 point building and painting event at my LGS. While there is no requirement to actually have a display board build, I want to have one. The idea I had was to use this group build to give myself the motivation to finish said board, but I could not think of anything that struck me as really unique. Most everything seemed to boil down to stuff like "Let's just build a small trench network and call it a day". Then, a bit of searching the web over the past few days lead me to this picture:

Image

It's the Shepherdstown lock along the C&O Canal. It was too beautiful an image (I think) not to at least try and somehow incorporate into a board. Plus, it would be something that would work equally well for the Warhammer 40K Tau army I will be building / displaying as well as my Warmahordes armies (Cygnar / Legion) and, if I ever got a group that wanted to play it, Dark Potential.

I have the material to start this build in my car, going to be getting to work on it soon. Before I do, I just want to give a basic dimensional note. The actual abandoned lock is going to end up accounting for a ~3" deep area that is about 3" wide and 1'8" long. So, it will take up a rather large chunk of the board. Here's hoping this comes out well! More pictures when there is something to show.

Minor progress. I have the board built and framed (no pictures yet, so it might as well have not happened) What I want to report on, however, is the sheer size of the abandoned lock. I did some conversions of the average C&O Canal locks. The 100' by 15' by 16' locks convert to a 1'8" by 3" by 3.2" model lock. I know numbers might not be all that helpful, so I have attached a visual representation.

An old Kel'shan Stealth Suit is in the picture for scale purposes. The bricks on the left side build to the max height (a little under the 3.2" of an exact match). We shall have to see how this looks once built, yes?

Edit - Sorry, bad image link

Slowly but surely, I guess. Got a bit more progress done today, in so much as I built up half of the lock. My hope (alongside getting some room cleaning done this weekend) is to at least have the other half of the lock done before Sunday, if not also have the hillside built up some as well. We'll see how it goes. Here's the requisite pic:
