Thanks for the warm Welcome. Going to get those orcs seals and finish the poison mortar I have on the back burner tonight... if I have time wash and start layering the Reaver as well.

Welcome to #thedailypaint!

Ocean has it right, to make it believable paint the wood grain. Which is annoyyyyying!

Any brown on the lighter side will do. A more neutral tone like you said.

Is there any texture sculpted into the wood. If so I will usually base a very light brown almost tan. Wash it dark brown and then drybrush the light brown again.

If there is no texture how about painting it like bone instead?
