Wood warp?

Post by Nappen » Mon Aug 21, 2017 7:47 am

Someone asked me this question and I am not sure how to reply. I have not had it happen to me, so not sure how to fix it.

They were making a terrain board and cut the plywood and glued the foam on it, like we all do. They say it did not get wet, had weights on them, but it bowed up at the corners. Is there any way to fix that? Other than flip it over and put weight on it some more, not sure what you can do.

It doesn't need to get wet specifically, humidity will do, using foam board is the only way we have found around it. (ie. don't use wood.)

I haven't had that issue, but am sure it would be frustrating

the glue could have had too much liquid in it as well but anyway, however it happened, I would try to maybe add some 1"x2" or so, probably along the edges, at least two. It'll make it higher, a bit, but hopefully correct the bow. Note I haven't tried this or anything I'm just brainstorming. I'm not sure there is a way to fix it per se.

If that doesn't work it might need a few more "struts" like an X pattern (catty corner) - or even a whole nother sheet of wood underneath, turned 90o so the wood grains are perpendicular.

Not really a great option, I suppose. You might tell your friend to try and check with a local carpenter or hardware guy too, see if they have any thoughts. Or a model rail roading group might be good too, then tend to do a lot with tables as well.

Tell him good luck!

If you try gluing the other side, sometimes it will warp in reverse and correct itself

Are these just pieces of plywood with the foam on top, no frame? If no frame, I'd do a frame of 2x2s, making sure it forces itself flat...
