Blue's #thedailypaint

Postby Blue » Fri Mar 02, 2012 6:56 pm

I figured I join in here, as my schedule only permits me a little progress each day anyway, this seems fitting for me.

Today I managed to strip the paint off of my Skyray... Been bathing since7/27 and was in great condition. Paint melted right off...

Been working slowly on my Xv-88's...

I've been trying to work out a camo scheme that I'm happy with. Overall I'm happy with this scheme I'm just trying to figure out the shadows and HL's. After this thread I went to the other half of the tank and just applied the ink into the recesses with a light glaze over the whole thing. It didn't come out too bad but I definitely need to start Zen highlighting each color as I add them into the camo for some HL's.
Any advice here is appreciated... (I do plan on pin washing details)

Tomorrow will be playing with oil washes rather than acrylic for shading. GW's washes just never seem to work for me the way I want them too and never give me the shading I want. They seem to run out of the panel lines and are also thicker or thinner in different areas.

What's with the # anyway?

Two things:
1) I want to steal your Broadsides. Seriously beautiful conversion.
2) Let me know how the Oil Washing goes. I've been wanting to try it for a while, but I sort of want to clear my backlog of projects and start carte blanche with it on something now.

Thanks Mike, the conversion has all types of flaws which I hope to work out in Version 2. Hopefully a video as well...

The oil washing so far went pretty good. Applied over a gloss varnish it runs right into the recesses. With some more experimenting I should have a thinning ratio down. On the nids it really looked better to just pin wash the recesses rather than wash the whole area.

Clean up is a must and tomorrow I'll post some pics of that if all goes well. The nids weren't really the best way to show off this technique. Better suited for armor. :D

Watching some weathering vids using oils and the effects are astonishing. Just a lengthy process with the 24hr dry time.

Also managed to give the camo test tank and my failed Dark Vlad a scrub and re-dipped for another 24 hrs as some of the primer remained.

Not much progress on my end. Work kept me late last night so that knocked out the hour or so I have available to 'hobby'. I did manage to clean some mold lines off of a railgun (hammerhead) and started working on the ion gun next.

The oils worked fairly well although nothing worth showing in a pic. The minis were prepainted months ago by the girl and I just used them as test subjects. With some more experimenting I should be able to hash out a proper ratio and be able to pin wash panel lines like no other.

I can say that oils are the way to go when it comes to painting recesses. You can actually watch them pool (if they ever do) and clean it off even hours later. After about 24 hrs they seem to fully dry and don't move quite as easy. But if one were to add the paint then come back an hour or so later, after the thinner has had time to evaporate, one could clean off any unwanted paint with the wipe of a brush or cotton swab soaked in thinner. Really long work time. If you've got the ability to varnish easily and quickly (and regularly) then give oils a shot.

Hope to make it home tonight to get some progress on something...

:D Thanks bud!

Managed to paint the pants, well base coat the pants of three firewarriors last night and cleaned off all the mold lines on the ion cannon. I'm also slowly working on a paint stripping video for my channel. Just ordered a Blue Yeti Mic to record my voice overs! Can't wait to try it out!

Do you think it would work well on a bigger surface, like a tank for instance?
