See, I would suggest that it lets you be a lot more aggressive because you get the opportunity to deny areas of the tabletop without having to move bodies to those areas. What this really means to me, more than anything else, is that you can then get forward with a much more compact application of force, either all together or in two waves covering each others' advance, wherever you really want the fight to happen. When force is compacted like that, your elite units are better able to exploit the advantages of their firepower.

If you don't need to advance in the scenario, then the guns can form a great dilemma -the combination of range plus good AoE damage means that they can keep gunning for anything that pokes its head out while you push your infantry into their ideal engagement range, say RB2, and then dig in. At that point you've got a strong point with fire support. Hopefully by moving into the middle of the board you've cut down on the amount of the tabletop that you can't reach out and touch, whether that be because of terrain blocking LoS/LoF from your deployment zone or because your unit wants to engage at close ranges.

I think that when it comes to digging out well-entrenched enemies the role of artillery is actually more about keeping them where they are while units with template weapons, grenades, or simply a whole freaking lot of firepower move up. Or, just keeping them where they are while you ignore them. That's the thing about a really well dug-in opponent - if he can be ignored, go on and do what it is you need to do. Just let the threat of artillery keep those units where they are. Someone who is determined to hug cover should be left there if at all possible because trying to dig out well dug-in infantry is a tedious and dangerous job.

So it does have the potential to be an offensive and defensive weapon afetr all, as well as a distraction to advancing enemies.
