Should I delay the release of Dark Potential by a month?

Post by miniwargaming » Mon Sep 10, 2012 9:19 am

We're having issues with two of our sculpts - the X'Lanthos Assassin and the Petrov-Morales Corporation Heavy Weapon Specialist with Flame Launcher.

What I want to do is redo the sculpts from scratch, but that will delay our initial launch until the end of October, maybe even early November.

So, here is the question. Do we delay the launch to make sure those two miniatures are as good as they can be, or do we launch even though those two miniatures will have a lot of flaws?

I think I know what the obvious answer is, but I want your input.

well personally I'd like to see what they look like now :P

but I'd be willing to wait, I mean if you put out something your not 100% on you'll always regret it

to be honest it is hard to make a vote on this without knowing the sort of issues that are being had with these two particular models.

is it how the design of the mini looks? is there an issue with how best to break up the parts for assembly? is there changes coming to the rules for the unit(s) in question that will change how the miniatures should look in game? is there manufacturing issues with these two minis?

as a writer, i can appreciate the need for not wanting to show unfinished product, but at the same time when you approach a group of people for input, it becomes difficult to provide an educated opinion without knowing the details. we don't need the deep gritty finite details, but more than just "issues".

The problem is that the Assassin mainly didn't cast properly, and so there are all sorts of flaws that the end user would have to fix.

As it turns out the Flamer is probably ok (just got off the phone with our manufacturer), but we'd still be delayed a bit to redo the Assassin.

In that case I would agree to delay in order to work out the issues with the assassin.

does the manufacturer give you test versions of the miniature for you to see? if so, i would suggest checking out the PMC mini before making a decision on that front. Even though they say it is probably ok, that word probably should makes it seem there is still a chance it might not go through.

I think that I quite agree, we don't really have enough information to give you an effective response. I think that in general, the answer to "do we ship with flaws or delay to fix?" should most always be "delay to fix." There really isn't a substitute for quality product.

Now, that being said, I do want to say that if you do delay again, I feel like you do owe those who put their money into this project and have been waiting some sort of consideration. This doesn't mean that the decision should be made to rush things, not much good comes of that. The fact of the matter is, however, this could be a longish delay and it's essentially just good business to try and take care of customers when product delivery has to be delayed. How, or what, or even whether you really should is something you will have to decide - this is just what I think. If you'd like some suggestions, I think those upthread who have been saying we need to see what everything looks like are giving you one clue. There are other options as well.

I would never condone shorter delivery time at the expense of model quality. If only because i'm a lazy and poorly equipped modeller :)

But yeah, i would efinately agree with the others. i would LOVE to see WIPs for the models. I've always enjoyed watching the process. Plus, if nothing else, it's better than silence.

For Dark Potential to really take off, you'll need the best looking models you can get. With games out there like WarmaHordes, Infinity and WHF/WH40k already with stunning models, if Dark Potential doesn't meet a certain standard, people wont want to play with the shoddy looking pieces. Delay as long as you need and get it right from the initial release.

I tend to not have many duplicates in my armies. if I get something, I'd definitely wait to have a better-looking one.
