So with summer rapidly approaching, and new tires for my bike having gotten to my house, I figure it's time to start riding more.
My goal is to be able to ride 40 miles in a single trip by the time school starts back up on August 29, or 26, or whatever day it is.
For those that live in the same latitude as VA (I forget the approx latitudes), you know how humid it can get at mid-day, thus making me want to be done fairly early in the day.
Now for the plan... *Start the summer off by riding 20 miles in a trip, gradually increasing distance as the summer goes on. Don't know what else to put here. Just wish me luck on my journey to becoming a long distance road biker, just for fun of course.
They really do, that's why you get an in ground swimming pool
I'll make sure to take some metal minis with me and chuck them at every bike rider I see while out, just in case one of them's you

Alas Ashran I'm in Northern VA, up by DC. Why not just grab rocks instead of $20 models. Mind I ask, what part of VA are you in Ashran?
I don't like giving what city/county, but, I'm in northern virginia as well
And, if I manage to cause you to wreck, it's a small consolidation, something you can paint in the hospital? /shrug
Plus, you'll know it was from me and not some random kid who would just throw lame old rocks!

Ok, you do that! Should I wreck I will take the mini and paint it in your honor, then make it my avatar in honor of you. Maybe we could meet up for a game at some point.

good luck. It's not that hard to do long distance riding. I am often doing 40km rides locally, and about 60 - 70km longer trips to visit my mother. longest ride I did was 110km.
I say to carry enough fluids. I usually carry two or three litres of water/gatoraid and I tend to drink most of it. I beleive I did 16 miles the other week before I got sick.
riding up to your goal works a charm. I've done that. I absolutely enjoy riding. Just make sure it's set up well so you don't get chafed rumpus or sore knees.
Good luck to you.

Went for a ride today and averaged a 5-min mile. Did 18 miles in 1hr 57mins with stops. The new tires I got for my bike proved to work well; a lot better for riding pavement than fully treaded tires. Then when I got back, did some push-ups and sit-ups. Plan on doing some more riding tomorrow while I have the day off.

What's been your longest ride so far this summer?
I used to cycle hardcore in my 20's, and I lived in Southern Maryland and SE Virginia, so I know about the heat and humidity. The secret to distance riding under these conditions is to do a steady pace, regardless of actual speed. If you can get out on a lightly-congested highway (not likely where you're at) you won't have as many starts and stops. Always have "the kit": 2 spare innertubes, pump, tire changing tools, as well as a bottle of club soda (contains some quinine) and a bottle or two of water. You could go with sports drinks but they tend to have a lot of sugar (or worse, artificial sweeteners-ugh).

you should throw in some pull ups with those pu/su, will help build your core. also doing other cardio might help too, running, side stradle hops (jumping jacks), and maybe some low impact cardio machines at a gym. do you ride with other people or just by yourself? I've always found that riding with a friend or two will help push yourself to acheive goals. good luck!
