Dangerdog's- Renamed: Water of Life (Tau) FINISHED!

Post by dangerdog » Sun Apr 17, 2011 4:25 pm

The idea for this piece is to create a semi cliffside statue as a warning for sailors.

Image

The statue is a modified Disney toy. The pic below was found on the internet It is the closest to the original that I could find. But you get the idea.

This looks great Dangerdog!
What toy was it and what did you do to it? I may need to make one of these for myself...
It really looks like a Tau figure! 8)

The figure was close in appearance to the one below it. It started as the witch from Sleeping Beauty. The head looked almost exactly like the one in the pic below it. It was a newer version, so none of the McDonalds toy collecters had pics on there sites yet. I used a sharp blade and sand-paper to remove the horns and the nose. Then I carved the nose-slit that the tau are known for.

Joe, thanks for the kick in the butt. I do this for fun, so unfortunately it gets put on the back burner when things come up. Such as working on the graphics for an iPhone game. :D But I needed the reminder to post, thanks again. 8)

Now I have added a base and cliffs. There is also a frame made from foam core. This frame will be used to contain the wall putty that will be sculpted to create waves.

OK, so here is the puttied piece. Before the piece is painted it will be lightly sanded to remove loose chunks of putty. Then I'll start the painting. My next pics will have some paint on them!

Finished Piece! I painted the water in layer, slowly getting lighter, until I was using white to highlight the crashing waves. The cliff was painted in black and highlighted gradually in layers of grey, the same for the statue. I've also added green to the bases of the cliff, rock and statue to look like algae.

Thanks for the support Blue and Joe. I had fun with this one and had a singular idea throughout. It was probably the easiest piece I've done to date, because of it's smaller size. (6"x10")

I also forgot to mention that I sprayed the whole piece in a watery glue mixture. I used Gloss Mod Podge glue and a lot of water and put it in a spray bottle. This gave the entire piece a satin sheen and tied the whole thing together. A trick I learned from old mini railroad books found at a garage sale. :D

"I LIKE IT!" And while it's not a Cobra Assault Rifle, I think this piece is fantastic. Very well done, I'll definitely be following your future builds. (If you get where the quote is, you get a cookie)
