The weapon seemed like a regular Mk. IV bolter but it fired rounds that exploded on impact, causing massive burning and pain to anything it came into contact with.
Regular bolts detonate shortly after impact, ie inside the target, causing it to literally explode from the inside. A bolt that detonates upon impact is a significant downgrade.

Boy has no idea about regular SM weapons for he doesn't get out much...so he modifies them with poison and such because he likes to do that. I didn't say it had to be useful.

This sounds fun... sadly I only know about orks... and Rping as an ork doesnt sound all that fun to me... I really should read up on some fluff for other races...
