choosing a faction

Post by MoarDakka » Mon Apr 11, 2011 10:44 am

im trying to pick an army to start off with but i don't know what the playing style is like i dont want to buy the rule book yet cuz i would just buy a starter army to get it. so do each of the factions have a playing style? I also read that u could add one army with another like is this true?

IMO, don't think of HGB like a GW game with it's "playstyles." This is a very shooty game to start (CC will be rare) and every faction is balanced and you can play however you want. Some armies have particular weapons they like (South like lasers vs. North like guided missles), and approaches to Gear design (North are specialists, South are generalists, CEF love tanks, etc.) but otherwise your force is going to be competitive no matter what you choose.

you are allowed to give any army black talon add ons but i think it has to be pl 4 to feild them. if i were you i would go to http://www.dp9.com and download the reference weapon sheet in downloads and download gear garage to see some more things you can do and have a look at the armies, use the weapon page as a reference for the weapons on the guys. gear garage is very easy to opperate and is fun too.

If I bought the two player starter for HGB would it come with the full rule book with all the rules needed to play? Also are all the armies listed in the core rule book?

you would get the rulebook, like the big rulebook and it have all the units and everything except black talons, caprice and cef because you need to but return to cats eye. (book)

you can feild the port arthur korps but the cef come in a different rulebook, fear not, it only cost about 25 dollars and it comes with updated rules and new armies and units. also, i would reccomend getting the pak starter force and return to cats eye as that will get you heaps of pak/cef minis and it will give you the rules. if your intent on getting two player starter, i would reccomend you get a basic squad for cef, a basic squad for another army and the rulebook as that will cost a little extra but get you your two favourite armies. you also need the return to cats eye to play cef but port arthur korps is in the rulebook and has many of the same rules and minis

you can still use port arthur without buying return to cats eye but its not the same thing just a bit different, also, tey give downloads of data cards on dp.com and they give this free army builder called gear garage that builds the army without the rulebook or return to cats eye, i would still get the rulebook to learn the rules but you could just download that and not get return to cats eye, and download the datacards

I'm trying to figure out if what you can build in Gear Garage is always a legit army. I'm still waiting for my starter pack and rule book to arrive, but I did pre-order the new starter kit, so that is expected.

Specifically I'm trying to figure out if you can play a pure black talon army at all point ranges. It looks like the smallest point range it may not be possible.
