From WH40k to HGB

Postby Ricer » Wed Apr 06, 2011 2:12 am

OK I have weighed my pros and cons which I figured I should post since it seems a lot of people have asked the same questions. (This is with a few hours of research of HGB and days of research into WH40k)

First: Cost (this is a big issue with starting an army in WH40k or for that matter any game)?

Well I set it up 3000pts is what I like to have (this giving an array of options for competing). I have researched days and days how to build an IG army of 3k pts for the least amount (and with the way I play) and the cost would be a little over 1.2k USD. As for just a few hours of research I can have over 3k pts of HGB for less than half that amount in any army I play.

Second: Will I be competitive?

Well from playing a few games of WH40k I am competitive with my full 3kpts out side of that it depends what I face (basically mobbed by orks is no fun :( ). As for HGB with reading multiple threads on the subject the starter kits give you so many options that you are competitive and the rules show how your threat levels require you to do more than just destroy your enemy.

Third: Can I get a game?

This one I have no idea ... (depends on your own situation)? Although I can tell you, I have problems even getting a game of WH40k in, one I have to travel an hour one way to play and then 50% of the time no one there plays or they don't want to. (Now that being said that is expected with every game.)
Dark Angels Always Building completed up to 3000 and more
Nids 1850pts completed
Cygnar - Commandos

heavy gear blitz is a great game.
answer to 1: it cost very little to get about 500 points (about 60 dollers) you have a playable force right there. personally, i think heavy gear blitz is quite cheap compared to other war games, you only need to spend about 250 dollers to get a huge force, a rulebook, tokens and other good stuff.
answer to 2: i would recommend you go to the dp9 website and download gear garage. it is great and simulates any army almost perfectly. AND ITS FREE! you can be competietive but it really just depends on your skill, a general word of advice is to go for airdroppable snub cannons.
answer to 3: you can easily get quite a few games in about 2 hours. a samll 500 point game only takes about half an hour if you roll quick and move quick. it is still quite a fun game thought and i thnk you will love it. its quite a break from warhammer 40k.

Depend on where you live I suppose. If you're a local, I know there's a few of us spread about the west end of Lake Ontario. Go to DP9forum if you are and look for the player finder section. I've got a GTA player thread buried in there somewhere.

you should also read gear up and aurora, aurora is available at the dp website for free download (its their magazine like white dwarf) and gear up is for free at drive thru rpg.com. both are pretty useful, althought aurora has more tactics and moddeling then campaigns and stuff.

The difference between the two is that Aurora is a fan e-zine whereas Gear Up is from their "official" Heavy Gear E-Zine. Gear Up also bring out a lot of rules before they're "official" to have the community play with, which you would never get in a White Dwarf.
