The books are not really out of line with other books of same quality, size and make-up. But, the mini-rule book is a bargin, esp if you don't want all the back ground, photos, fluff, advice, charts etc.

I have seen at least 3 typos so far. I need to start writing their locations down for reference, so I can tell GW that I am a decent editor that would work for a reasonable fee.
You see what I did there?

For what you get- a beefy rulebook that't thicker than most gamer's biceps with a lot of color print on heavy semi-gloss paper in a hardcover binding- $90 sounds about right on the retail price.
It's the contents- about 1/2 the book being a catalog for the shinies- that's the problem. Then the questionable rules changes (esp Fantasy) that make the previous edition rules look tight... Let's just call the content questionable and leave it at that. Me, I'm more miffed that they haven't bothered to update Dark Elves even though 8th ed has been out for 2 years now. That, and I can't find anyone willing to roll with a 7th ed game. So either way, I'm sort of screwed. Thanks, guys.

UPDATES?? umm i am still using the army book i got for my dwarfs when i started in 6th edition. Not that dwarfs really need much changes more just get the rules lined up with the changes over the last few editions of core rules.

Relax. With average dice you now charge 10". Nice speed buff. And with the emphasis on protracted combats, you should feel right at home. Should be a pretty good time to be a dwarf.

Like I said the only real reason an update is needed is to make the rules between the army and core rule book line up so reference is quicker rather then double checking. I am fine with dwarfs the way they are.

GW's main practice is to recycle their rule systems and codex books in a never ending cycle of printing.
They aren't out to make the "best system they possibly can." , creating other new and exciting products to flesh out their game line.
They used to make all sorts of bookshelf and "side" games, arguably their best gaming products which have been all but destroyed because they can't bring in the revenue of their "top" systems.
They gutted their systems years ago to make them "easier" and more playable to entry gamers of a more youth oriented age bracket.
Over the years more and more gaming systems have led a charge to steal away gamers who are after something "more" with their games.
GW isn't the only game in town anymore so keep that in mind when you see new editions coming out. You'll start seeing old mechanics and new tweaks seen in other system leak their way into GW products one way or another.
They are most certainly "upgrading" their games with a higher level of interaction and dynamic reactionary mechanics. Something unheard of for the last forever of 40k.
I think this is an attempt to retain existing players and even bring back the old guard who are waiting for a decent edition to dust armies off and maybe buy some new product.

It's why I hesitate about getting into GW games. Their stuff is not cheap and it seems to be in a constant state of change. $90 for a rulebook that inevitably will be obsolete seems ridiculous to me no matter what the quality of the book. This is all the more insulting when comments here claim that the book only accounts for 25% rule updates, the rest being just regurgitated content. A reputable company would save the new edition release for a complete overhaul of the rulebook or else release a cheaper book more in line with the 25% of changes made.
May I ask how many years it's been between 5th and 6th edition?

This is why I got out of GW games to get off the merri-go-round of constant regurgitated content and the ridiculous ramp up costs of the models. They only update the rules to keep up with the price hikes. I believe the more they update the more I see a crony marketing gimmick run amok to keep people buying overpriced resin.
