Starting Dwarfs.

Post by SonsofRuss » Fri Sep 28, 2012 7:24 pm

So I was wondering what people think about play Dwarfs. I really like the steam punk idea and really haven't ever played any Fantasy. I've been reading about them and just wanted to see what other gamers thought of them. I'm not really into magic either and they have none so that makes it easier for me to start. I'm looking for what units to start out with since I'm waiting on the Codex to arrive and theres really no game store near me. I will be going to the locals soon when I have more off time to jump into some games and try some stuff out.

Well some people think dwarfs are a bit boring to play, as they only play gunline, well mostly anyway. You can check the beat the cooler batrep to see what happens if they stray too far from that.

To start off all you need is the battalion, after that another battalion, some grudge throwers will also help you.

You will want a couple of decent sized units of warriors, some thunderers supported by cannons, organ guns and grudge throwers.

Dwarfs have a few options to be more aggressive like miners and rangers, but few people use these. They can be okay though. The main thing to realise is that dwarfs are a mostly defensive army, and an army that consists entirely of war machines and infantry, there are very few ways to 'mix it up' so to say.

Hope this helps.

Arnathos pretty much hit the nail on the head. 2 battalions and some grudge throwers will do you well. As far as Generals go go for the anvil of doom. Also dont fall into the misconception dwarfs only play gun line. You are going to want around 2 30 man blocks of dwarf warriors with great weapons. Having cheap troops with great weapons comes in handy as they become on par with a lot of armies elite choices. Plus with way charges work in 8th don't be afraid to charge out.

Also make sure you give your cannons flaming every game
I fall into a dark hole
And I can't come out
Do you know if Merlin did exist
Or Frodo wore the ring
Did Corum kill the gods
Or where's the wonderland
Which young Alice had seen
Or was it just a dream
I knew the answers
Now they're lost for me

Ya, gunline isnt nessesary. Ironbreaks, Hammerers, Longbeards are all rather good for CC.

The charges are funny sometimes.... Ive beaten Skaven in CC, won the combat res, than over ran them... funny as skaven have +1 to flee and dwarfs have -1 to pursue.

Oh awesome info everyone. Yeah I was watching beat the cooler batreps and thats the first time ever seeing anyone field dwarfs. I'm still waiting on the codex and was wondering how GW does them for Fantasy? I've been playing 40k since about 99 but never tried Fantasy. I'm trying to get some stuff off ebay right now and thats going well so far. Another question is what do you all think about Slayers? They look so rad and from the batrep they can stomp skelies. I guess I'm just going to have to watch a lot more battle reports on youtube and watch tactics. I wish I could come up to the club and get some games going but im stuck on the west coast for now. maybe I'll be out there next year.

Im not big on slayers. They are nice with being Unbreakable, thats a tough one to crack (I had Ogres against Owens slayer list, and if it werent for them being unbreakable, I woulda had him sooner). I just find with Hammerers being stubborn and better in combat they win out in my lists, I'm always running Hammerers.

Slayers are fun and such, but a tricky unit to run. Now, keep in mind a slayers strenght will equal their enemies toughness. So if you run them, they shine against monsters.... and stuff with high toughness..... so basically slayers always hit on 4's at the highest, they do have a time and place for sure, but Id avoid too many slayers in one unit.
They also have slayer axes, so you can pick between a greataxe or 2 axes.

hey Cam, great batrep by the way. So slayers are good against the tough ones. Yeah since I have nothing to read but stuff online, which I hate, I have to wait to read the units that I can take. I'd love to see some more ogres in batreps also. I have been looking at the war machines too and I wouldn't mind running a gun line. Crafty little dwarfs. I don't know if Matt will ever beat owens Dark elves cause I like his dwarf army.

Owen is fun to play against. When I showed up for that game I thought he was going pure gun line/warmachines and boy dwarf gunline can destroy Ogres, but alas he had Slayers!

Lots of guns and runes is how I run my dwarfs.... my other armies are WoC, DoC, Ogres... they all have hardly any shooting/warmachines (I know leadbelchers and hellcannon) and usually run magic heavy.... so I started dwarfs as I thought they would be the opposite of those armies.

I have a Throgg army, Ill be running against Owen next.

I tend not to do a gun line, I take a warmachine or two and two units of thunderers most games with the rest CC units. i love my miners if the other player has some war machines so you can get in and at least distract them. I have a dozen slayers and have yet to ever field them so i can't say to much on their field use. I like to use hammerers a lot i took some ironbreakers in my last game and they did great once in CC wiped out a skeleton warrior unit all on there own with only 1 of them dyeing.

As for starting everyone has told you the best way to start as the dwarf battalion is fantastic for starting out.
