Thinking of getting into Warhammer Fantasy

Post by LoneHero2008 » Tue Mar 06, 2012 6:42 am

Hello :D

I'm normally an Ork player in Warhammer 40k, and I've been playing Warhammer Online as a Black Orc for a long time. So I'm thinking of doing a Greenskins army, any suggestions on where to start with my lovable Orcs?

Here's what I'm going off of by assumption, correct me if I'm wrong:
Black Orcs are the Fantasy equivalent to Nobs
Goblins are the Fantasy equivalent to Grots/Gretchin.
Space Orks - Big Mek Azak Mostdakka's Warband - About 470 Points
Space Marines - Blood Ravens - 500 Points even
Wins: 8
Loses: 15
Draws: 3

Pretty much.

The secret of Orcs... pretty much like 40k is Boyz. Get lots of them (a block of 40 is a good start). A few small Night Goblin Archer units with a couple of Fanatics always helps. Maybe some Savage Orcs... even a small flanking unit of 15 is good. Boar Boyz are nice, the chariots are pretty nasty (even the Goblin one). The War Machines are nice... Bold Throwers, Doom Divers, Rock Lobbers... Don't go too crazy spreading out your points though. Focus on a few at a time.... Don't take one of each War Machine, but take 2 Rock Lobbers. Take Savage Orc or Black Orcs, not both. Most of all have fun.

On a side note... If you want the wacky randomness of the 40k Ork vehicles, then you might look at Skaven too. To me they have the closest feel of what the 40k Orc had.

The important difference between 40k Orks and Fantasy Orcs is that Orcs have animosity. ( Unless that was changed with the most recent rule book.)

No. They still have it, but it is not as bad... sort of.

Might be wise to get 40 normal boys, 20 black orks and a warboss, after that some savage boys are pretty good and maybe an arachnok apider and some goblins to provide more numbers. Goblins are almost skaven cheap (in points and in $)

I'm tempted to get a Black Orc Big Boss, but I don't have an Orcs and Goblins book yet so I don't know if he fills the same slot a Warboss would or if he is a 'hero'. I'm going out to get the books tomorrow.

He has the highest Leadership, so most people take them. Mages... or Shamans for Orc are very important. Goblin Magic is pretty weak, but they are cheap. Night Goblins can have Goblin Fanatics hidden in the units and these can do a lot of damage... sometimes to your own units. Savage Orcs are pretty nasty, but they lack armor. they have a 6+ ward save from their Tattoos and I think there is a magic item that improves this to a 5+ for pretty cheap.

Alright, I bought the Warhammer Fantasy 8th edition rulebook, as well as the Orcs and Goblins army book for myself and, for my brother who is looking into getting into the game, a Vampire Counts army book.

Now, this is just to make sure I'm understanding what the rulebook says:

Say me and my brother play a 2000 Point battle.

According to the rules:
At least 500 points must go to Core Units.
No more than 500 Points can be spent on Lords, Heroes and Rare Units each.
No more than 1000 Points can be spent on Special Units.
One Lord or Hero must be designated as the General.

Am I correct or am I still a tad confused?
Space Orks - Big Mek Azak Mostdakka's Warband - About 470 Points
Space Marines - Blood Ravens - 500 Points even
Wins: 8
Loses: 15
Draws: 3

That is correct. Also keep in mind that under 3000 points games you are limited to 3 special choices of the same kind, and 2 rare choices of the same kind, the rules for it are listed somewhere under the army/ grand army rules. Heroes and lords are only limited by points, and core units are not limited at all.

Another question. In the Orcs and Goblins army book, it says the Black Orc Warboss's starting/standard equipment is a huge array of hand weapons and great weapons as well as heavy armor.

What exactly do they mean by 'huge array'? Does this mean I could treat the guy as having two hand weapons, a great weapon and such?

If you go into the full description for black orcs, they have a rule that lets them swap between a few types of armaments from turn to turn. You lose this if you take a magic weapon though.

The list looks pretty solid, nice and diverse. But one thing I noted, the Wolf Riders are illegal, unless I'm reading your list wrong. When you take an upgrade like shield or spears, you need to buy it for the whole units. It say "Entire unit may be upgraded with" which means the whole units must be upgraded, or none at all. Just a clarification. ^_^

And happy WAAAAGH!ing!
1500ish Space Marines - (Under Construction)
???? Orks - (stored away at home)

Waiting to see what Fantasy brings.

One single spear chukka isn't going to do anything. I recommend dropping it. The rest of your list is kitted out for fun, and I like it, aside from lack of Warboss on Wyvern. I played him in a tournament and he did amazing things. One game he killed 13 elves in a single round of combat. I love the Armor of Gork, rolling a 6 for impact hits is quite fun.
