New To Fantasy

Post by vinsanity642 » Sun May 10, 2015 11:54 am

My girlfriend is getting into Fantasy. She doesn't have any experience with any wargaming. She is really looking into the High Elves. I plan on shower her some Old World Wars batreps to help her get a feel for everything. So after she gets the codex and a rule book, what do you think she should star collecting? She is huge into the magic aspect, likes shooting but is definitely an assault type player.

Thanks!

You could get the Isle of Blood set, sell the skaven half and start her with the Elf half. Or just check ebay for the elf half maybe.

Guildenstern is right, Island of Blood is a must have for her if she's sure that she wants to play the High Elves. It's the time to buy it since a new edition is coming and there are many exclusive models that you can't have anywhere else and that you want to have like the Reavers horse archers.

Awesome thanks guys! I'll let her know and we'll look into it. I can always keep the Skaven around they look cool.

Yes, and since the Skavens in the box are balanced to fight the elvish Island of Blood's content, you can use them to fight your girlfriend during your few first games so that she gets a good grip of how Fantasy is played.

For anyone liking the elves, yeah, it's good start. The new edition is about to drop so I wouldn't worry about getting to grips with the rules. We're all going to have to!

It's far from balanced with each other. The High Elves have a several hundred points advantage(the guy on the griffon costs quite a bit by himself).

Well, if she wins her first games, it will encourage her to go further in the hobby. It's kind of helping when you actually win your first games instead of being crushed all time.

High Elves are a good army, but they are hard to start playing as. I've played for about 2 years as HElves and its taken me that long to start winning more than 5% of the time.

Some tips for collecting:
Cavalry are good for filling core, as they are the same in $$$ (at least, in america) but more expensive in points.

White Lions are very good. I prefer them to Swordmasters because they are S4 with Great Weapons, have their cloaks, and are stubborn. This is better than an extra attack for the same cost. As for Phoenix Guard, they can survive fairly well (not against hordes :/) but they can't hit hard enough for their cost. White lions are the most effective for their cost, and I really regret not buying any when i started.
Lion Chariots are really good too.

Dragons, Phoenixes, Bolt Throwers, Skycutters, and named characters should be held off on. Proxy until you know what works for you before you buy. I never use dragons, but almost always bring my phoenix, so i bought a phoenix and not a dragon. (Phoenix has a sweet model by the way). You get the drill

Tips for playing: Magic is key for all elves, and the High Elves do it well. Loremasters are for lower point games even though they are lords. Never bring just a level 2 unless its below 1500 points.

High Elves are decent at shooting, but are better when they can set up good combats. Charge with 10 Silver Helms, flank with a Lion Chariot, and boom, unless its 40+ something zombies then you should be good.

Congrats on having a hobby tolerant girlfriend!
"Gollum, gollum!" -Gollum

High Elves- 2000+ points, only like, 10% painted so far
