Tomb Kings Softcover

Post by ParanoidEngineer » Sat Jan 24, 2015 9:22 pm

Okay so amongst all the exciting ratty releases coming our way this month I noticed a rather strange release hidden deep in the listings, and that's this softcover Tomb Kings army book:

http://www.games-workshop.com/en-GB/War ... Tomb-Kings

I'm curious what you guys and gals think of this. Firstly, why release this at all? Given the End Times is still in full swing and hardback books are all the rage at the moment, why should GW re-release a past book in soft-cover?

Secondly, why Tomb Kings? Not only are they now a union with Vampire Counts due to the End Times, but Orcs and Goblins are the most obvious choice for a softback release given their book is oldest of the hardbacks. And does this confirm the rumour that Beastmen and Bretonnia are gone for good given that they don't even have 8th ed. army books yet?

Finally, what trend does this indicate for the future of Warhammer? Though it's obviously a minor release, does it represent the beginning of a new chapter of army books, smaller and cheaper but more fitting with the skirmish concept that's being bandied around a lot at the moment. Obviously I could be making a fuss about nothing, but this book, in this format, at this point, makes no sense to me, and I'm hoping you fine forum-members can spit-ball to make me seem less insane.
I can't think of a witty signature.

no idea myself, I noticed it as well and thought, well that kinda sucks since I just bought the previous one but maybe it's merely a sign of re-releasing *all* the other (older) books pre-8th edition?

1) Hardbound has been out of print for around 6-12 months (may be longer - I'm old, time slides right on past and I don't even notice it). It's about the right amount of time for them to get a softcover order in and restock the shelves. The OnG book is still available in hardbound.
2) Legion of Undead allows TK models - need to get the stats somewhere
3) In regards to 9th, I believe TK will 'fade away'. You will notice that Nagash, Mortarchs etc can be used in a VC army but not a TK army. The rumors have been whispering that any "egyptian-themed" models will disappear from the shelves. This makes me sad, as I have long said that TK is a painter's delight. What a fun army to paint! That being said, I believe the current army books are going to be no less compatible with 9th than any previous army book in regards to edition change; it's just going to result in no new future TK models, and the current models will probably be sold until current stock is exhausted.

In reality though, that's all pure conjecture. I'm solid on the out of print issue, I just don't remember the date. I'd have to scan Warseer rumors for that, but they're too bitter over there. Every time I go there I end up wearing tattered turtlenecks and eye liner and listening to Black Veil Brides. Fat old man pulling goth/emo is NOT pretty ...

Bingo. That's what I'm thinking too. A lot of Vc players, including myself want to add a couple of the TK units "cough, casket of souls, cough" to spice things up and this makes things easier on us money wise. Wait, Gw is making things cheaper for it's players, well I'll be a.......

Don't do it, whineseer will destroy whatever sanity you may have left. Though the idea of an old fat man looking like Marilyn Manson amuses me. Take lots of pictures and post them up there.

They complain about how life is harsh and can't get their hair to flip to the side the way they want to, welcome to the real meaning of pain!

Don't forget Core Chariots and Tomb Princes/Kings. With Nehekharan Undead now = Undead, some WS6/7 Skellies in an eternally resurrecting unit can be pretty sweet. A friend and I team played Dead, his VC and my TK - some really nice synergies there.

Yeah. That would be me. Add more wrinkles, plenty of battlefield scars (Army vet) and bald and there ya go. Yuck.
