New Dwarf Player: Seeking Guidance

Post by RyeWilkes » Sat Nov 29, 2014 10:33 pm

Hey Guys,

I'm just getting back into the hobby as a whole and the group of people I play with who all have sizeable fantasy armies invited me out to play with them.

So i decided to pick an army i liked the look of and purely base my decision on dwarfs based on that.

I've order the army book and the vengeful throng to kick start my army.

Here comes the questions:

I'm going to use the kits to make Longbeards and ironbreakers and a gyrocopter... are these good decisions?

What general tactics should i run for my starting force?

What upgrades are good on units or must takes and what are not necessary?

I've looked on the GW site and i know i want to add some thunderers but what other units in the dwarf army book are fun to play and worth adding?

Suggestions and help are much appreciated!

Because my response to this would be far too long to justify typing it all out check out the comprehensive guide over on Bugmans Brewery for 8th edition Dwarfs. For ease of finding it just search "Warhammer Dwarfs unit review" into google and enjoy.

I have been watching this thread myself waiting for the response...why not interact with the community here? I'd love to see more Fantasy interaction. So, let's have your opinion then :)

Hello ! I suggest you to go see those two threads. There are a lot of infos on the Dwarves. The second thread is about a dwarven gunline army. If you want keep your friends, I suggest you to build a more balanced army because it's very unfun to face a dwarven gunline and people will hold a grudge against you. Basically, the Dwarves are built around a few warmachines, generally one or two Organ guns, a cannon and a Grudge thrower and 2 or 3 infantry blocks to intercept incoming units. People generally have one or two quarellers or thunderers squads of 20. The gyrocopters can be used to redirect charges, attacking enemy fast units or warmachines or flanking enemies. I suggest you to not take too much ranged stuff or your friends will be reluctant to play you. If you want to do competitive play, no quarter. :)

Same Dwarfs are a fun and competitive army, there are a few different tactica's online to help you out, as @Kovlovsky and @halt92 have said, Bugmans is a very good one if you are new to the game.

Since you have already selected your army you need to work out (this is mainly if you want to save as much cash as possible) what you want, what kind of army you want, and whether you want a competitive list or not, I generally recommend building towards Competitive as most people end up gravitating that way after a few wins, but anyways, that is a discussion you have to make as I we cant help much without that knowledge, however, there are several blue chip units in Dwarfs, first is the Rune of Valaya (Cant remember how to Spell it) and this Rune will save you, always havee it in your lists of 1000 Points and up, Organ Guns are amazing, and are the stablle of all competitive builds, a Cannon, you will need this to deal with Monsters, and Grudge Throwers with the right Runes are just mean, as for units, Longbeards are great, they have perfect mix of Offence and Defence, and both your Core ranged units are great are there particular job, but like I said, work out what kidna of list you want an so on, and id be happy to give some advice

Thanks for the awesome feedback guys!

As for a list i defiantly want to run mostly infantry up front and use my double cannons and i was thinking maybe a grudge thrower eventually in behind with two small units of thunderers on either side for protection. I would bring the gyrocopter just as a unit to fly around and cause problems... maybe help the thunderers too.

The one particular thing i want to make sure is competitive in my lists are my heroes... for the most part i want to run the units i like the look of the most but i want to have heroes that will win epic challenges and slaughter my enemies ranks.

So which heroes are the best combat machines?

Depends how you want to run them, on foot, shieldbearers, do you want a challenge winner or a 1 man unit killer, visa versa, as for Cannons, running 2 isnt good, runing 1 with 2 Organs is the go to, as 2 normal cannons will either be basically useless, I know it sounds bad but i have played agaisnt it before and i have seen it happen and it sucks, how about this, what area are you in? Geographically like USA, ERUOPE, AUSTRALIA, ASIA? And what is your meta like? What races do you friends play?

Indeed, you will have to adapt your ''killing machine hero'' to the army you're facing (lots of infantry, big creatures, machines?...). Good thing is, a dwarf lord can be easily modified with runes.
