Back in the 3.5 edition codex, I remember they just had introduced Huron Blackheart and his Red Corsairs who were made of defectors. It was the first deck showing paint scheme and some backstory for renegade Space Marines Chapters (the first 3rd ed codex spoke only about the original traitor legions...

The new Thousand Sons models released last december were taller and a bit larger and the recent Deathguard models are definitively larger, almost obese, so there is clearly a trend toward larger models for the best or the worse.

If lances are S5, they will be useful against marines. Wounding on 3+ instead of 4 or 5+ can make a big difference and since half or more of the players are playing MEQs of some sort.
