Re: Help creating a tau army

Some people look down on Tau because they won't kill everyone they meet. Not grimdark enough, maybe? The rules for Forgeworld models are in an Imperial Armour book, can't remember which one. But there are some free codex-approved rules on the FW site. Just Google "tau update" and look for the pdf. T...

Re: Help creating a tau army

So you currently have: 1 XV8 as your commander. If you can help it, don't glue any weapon options permanently on so you can change them as you need. 12 Fire Warriors with pulse rifles. Don't go for carbines, as they are inferior in every way that matter. 1 Piranha... I don't much about Piranhas, but...

Re: Quick Start Guide

Now that I think about it properly, the DP ruleset is free. This changes everything. (Well, most everything) Because one of the main reasons you don't give a try to a hobby is the investment. You fear that if you don't like it, you will waste money. This is why many Tabletop RPGs have free quick sta...

Re: Quick Start Guide

1. That is a fair point. One shouldn't force experienced players to buy a quick-start guide to get a reference sheet. But I agree to disagree whether such a document is useful for newbies. I remember, many years ago when I learned to play 40k with my brother, that we would use excruciatingly long mi...

Re: Quick Start Guide

Time for a review! On approachability and and Quick Start Guides. When introducing a person to a hobby, it should be done smoothly and gradually, especially when the hebby in question is a tactical wargame. The sheer amount of rules can smother a newcomer easily and turn them off for good. This is w...

Re: New faction idea: Yakuza Dominion

I have no real problems with an Oriental-themed faction... But names like "Yakuza" and "Sons of the Dragon" shouldn't be used. Both of these are extremely cliché in western media, especially the latter. And we have to remember that, assuming earth had a population of ten or so billion, the number of...

Business with a Salvager (Flash Fiction)

Business with a Salvager Desperate times called for desperate measures, and Simon knew that better than most. Still, doing business with a machine was against every paranoid cell in his brain. It had called itself a “Designer” of some sort, but Simon and his people called them just Salvagers. “Do, ...

On post-apocalypse and Dark Potential

I’m not quite sure why I wrote this essay-ish piece of writing. I think it entails why Dark Potential appeals to me as a wargame. Monkeys with guns – On post-apocalypse and Dark Potential Post-apocalyptic setting is a rather common trope nowadays. Zombie apocalypse in the last few years has been ver...

Re: 0.4.1 Experiments in List Building

Now, for the experimental lists. They are all built to 500 points and I offer them at this point without comment. I think it will create better discussion to have the lists here without strategy and invite comment on counters, ways you would use these lists, and possible weaknesses. PMC Director - ...

Re: Planning of a Stroy: X'lanthos poll

I have to agree with cymruvoodoo here. A military junta would be the quickest and easiest to implement in a crisis, as it's just an extension of the existing system. Though there has been a 100-years or on-and-off fighting with no victory in sight or even a place to retreat to... So the X'Lanthos mi...

Re: On core mechanics and rolling high instead of low

I can understand that. The reason why I think it's even a problem is that dice represent action. In the d20 ruleset the 20-sided die simulated the success of any action or skill. The higher the roll, the better the result. We almost naturally assume higher numbers to be better than lower. In warhamm...

On core mechanics and rolling high instead of low

Hello there! As you can see, I'm a new face. But since it isn't really that relevant, I'll go straight to the point: I think the mechanics would feel better if the dice were rolled over rather than under the desired value. And here's why: 1. It's easier to add than to subtract. People don't need sub...
